Hi. I have a 16.1 ISH who is quite a big lad that I am finding quite strong to jump. I have only had him about 6 months so he is a fairly new horse.

I don’t feel at all unsafe or nervous jumping him and am happy to let him go in to a fence in a good forward canter, but it seems to be in things like related distances he will lock on to the next fence lift his head and just charge to it.

I am currently jumping him in a 3 ring gag (second ring) which is a bit that came with him when I bought him. I kind of knew from day one that this wasn’t really the right bit for him. Now we are starting to get out competing a bit more I feel we really need to think about changing but there is so much out there I just don’t know where to start!!! :-/.

We are having weekly lessons which is improving our schooling massively but I still feel the jumping bit needs to change. He was previously evented by a man who would have been much stronger than myself!

I am looking for something that when I take a pull between fences he will respond to and perhaps help to lower his head a tad (like I mentioned above he locks on to a fence and chucks his head up).

I have recently changed his flat work bit (instructors advice) from a basic French link loose ring snaffle to a Neue Schule tranz angled lozenge eggbutt which has made a huge difference to our schooling! I am now thinking the Neue Schule route may also be good for jumping.

Anyway apologies for the essay!! Has anyone out there had a similar sort of issue? Or might be able to offer any ideas on where to start?

Many thanks :)
