Hi. Would anyone penalise a 4 year old shown in a pelham/double? Iv always known to show in this bit however I understand some may frown down on a younger horse being ridden in one. I just saw a post and it made me wonder what peoples views were (Assuming they go well and comfortably in a pelham/double) do you show a younger horse in one or would you get marked down?

Personally as a 4 year old I would be expecting them to be doing Novice classes which for M+Ms would be a snaffle only as per rules. Except PUK which is any acceptable bit. For a Hunter/RH/Cob/Hack novice classes are normally done in Pelhams/Doubles which IMO the horse has to be exceptionally schooled and mature for its age to carry one well and be ridden off the snaffle only!

I have a hunter and it will be his first year under saddle and I was thinking of trying a pelham (if he didn't school well in it, it would be removed straight away) but I'm undecided. I used to ride my old mare off the snaffle and she went beautifully but I feel a double would be too much in his mouth so a pelham would suit better

The majority of hunters go in pelhams or doubles. It is what is deemed correct! Novice hunter classes are few and far between and most younger horses end up contesting open classes generally! I have normally found a little lightweight pelham set (like you would put on a show pony- tiny thin sets!) sits well with the younger horses as you can throw away the curb and use the snaffle! Good luck :)
