i have a 15.3 mare, currentley ridden in Neue Schule Loose ring lozenger bit, with a flash. im finding that jumping, shes putting her head down and leaning on me, making control and steering shall we say a little hair rasing. so i want to change her bit. to something either stronger or that she cant lean on. shes not taking a hold, its just a strong lean. (teeth were done in december.)

so recommendatios please! i have tried her in various other bits for schooling, french link, normal snaffles and happy mouths, all of which shes not keen on. im thinking of staying in the Neue Schule range or looking into a myler. what i really want to avoid is spending a ton on different bits.

thanks guys!

TBH I'm not convinced this has anything to do with size zero culture.

Just sounds to me like bratty PC kid and bitchy mother.

Typical show scenario from my experience!

yeah id looked at thoose as Neue Schule do one or two. personally im not a fan of them, but im thinking a gag type bit isnt going to get her head up. and anything with a curb may cause her to fight more, shes good at sticking her tounge over or out, hence the flash.

i have a kimblewick i thought i might give her a try in just to see her reaction to the curb.

shes a fussy stroopy cow, and her tantrums are pretty spectacular, so also need to be careful of over bitting if you see what i mean.

lol.... i guessed that, thanks for the insight though!

no real reason tbh, i notice that Neue Schule do one that has a single link in it, still classed as a waterford,

im open to trying anything with her, im pretty sure its the metal she likes of the Neue Schule so want to stay in that range, but am thinking of trying things in the normal ss range before spending a fortune.

i had a feeling a gag would make her lean more and stick her head down further to aviod the poll pressure. so need to get her head up and get her off my hand.

the show i took her to was an experiant, i tried giving with the reins and just a small squezze to get her head up, but it didnt help. also tried letting her head go on landing so in that split second there was nothing for her to lean on... hehe that resulted in me heading for the ring tape rather fast!

Gags lift the head.
I would try a roller bit then if you arent a fan of waterfords.
Also im afraid to say thats the real answer is prob in schooling and practise.

Well, i had a strong pony yars ago and I found a curb bit was what he lent on a a gag (I had on the bottom ring at the time) did get his head up. Some people I have seen disagree buit it worked for him. Different bits work differently depending on te horse in my opnion. My horse at the moment goes very well in 3 ring gag for hacking and jumping. He tends to lean on a bit as opposed to pull/run away but he doesn't lean at all on that gag (althouigh someelse pointed out it's a not a real' gag - not sure what in that case, i've always known them as gags)

Another pony i have who used to rush his fences and plunge, i have him in a copper roller fulmer snaffle but back in the days I was brave enough to jump him i found he went pretty well in a rubber pelham but i took the curb chain off as with the curb he'd just stop dead full gallop if I pulled which wasn't much fun! Not sure what the equivalent of a pelham without a curb would be these days though. There's far too many new bits around there days I can't keep up!!!

Oh I have tried a Tom Thumb actually though, that was quite good but no better for mine really than the 3 ring gag so we sold it to a pony clubber who had a particularly strong pony and apparently it's worked a treat!!

her schooling is good, and have done a bit of grid work etc, due my loosing my confiendence ive not done a huge amount of jumping with her. in the second class at the weekend the moment she was leaning i pulled her up back to a walk collected her back up and carried on, so yes, still room for improvement there. it was also the first time id jumped her out side of a school. so its all a bit trial and error.

i have a normal stainless steel gag so may giver her a try in that to see what happens, ive schooled her in a wilkie, and the slight poll pressure they give she faught against. head in the air type fight...

A bit will not solve the issue - you need to school her to get her working from behind and create impulsion.

My horse even leans on a waterford !!

The only thing that has work for me is schooling and even more schooling.

i tend to agree with the schooling, long term, and i think as i jump her more, i will figure her out more, but at the moment, i need to keep her going to get my balls back. knowing shes going to tank after a jump isnt helping, at home i dont mind, but comps i do, i think im going to go back to a bit, that she cant lean on but not nessacery stronger, if that makes sence.

I had a cob that leaned and I put him a waterford baucher and it stopped him straight away. The only thing I found was that I didn't have as good steering.
