Right, one of my bosses horses has just come back from being in training for 8 months, and the decision has been made to find him a new job as he's useless on the track.
So, after giving him a week off, I've just started doing flatwork with him, but he is really leaning on the bit at the moment trying to go on the forehand. He used to be quite good at flatwork, but 8 months of not being made to work properly and he has forgotten most of it.
His conformation doesn't help either, sort of downhill, so he finds self carriage difficult.(see picture, though seems worse in RL)
He's also a bit "special", and if I use too much leg, tap with the whip, it usually ends with us going 100mph round the arena with his head in the air, so I could do with something he can't lean so much. He's currently in a single jointed rubber fulmer snaffle.
So, here is the catch
: He can't have anything other than rubber in his mouth as he hates any type of metal, and gets a sore mouth really easily (happy mouth also especially bad for that), so can't use waterford (would have loved to try but no point). Have tried hackamore, but that was a disaster (told you he's "special") I do have a pelham that I could try, but that seems like overkill without trying anything else first.
He has had his teeth, back etc checked, no problems there.
So, any suggestions for a rubber mouthed bit that he can't lean on and will help get him off the forehand that's somewhere between a snaffle and a pelham, would be greatly appreciated.
Sorry about the essay, I struggle to be concise when I write.
Thanks for any advise,
Jasmin.
