Yes, you did read that correctly! Little SWUO is in the process of being backed(will make a post in the NL about that tomorrow) and I'm after some bitting advice/ideas from you lovely lot

At the moment she's in a D-ring eggbutt snaffle with quite a thin mouthpiece as she has a small mouth but I am not a fan of the nutcracker action and I get the impression that she's not 100% happy all of the time, although obviously I realise that she's going to play with it as it's all new to her, and she is showing signs of accepting the contact etc with it BUT I'd still like opinions as to whether to carry on using this bit, or use something else, and if so, what?
I do have a loose ring french link, but it's a chunkier mouthpiece, although I am a fan of the french link in general.

Issues we have encountered with regards control have all been with Jelly sticking her head up high and tanking off. Coral is very quiet with her hands and is grabbing onto abit of mane rather than pull if there's a problem so I don't think that SWUO tanking is due to being 'jabbed'.

Bits I've been considering include a half-cheek french link, and a loop ring(wilkie) snaffle, although that one would obviously have the nutcracker action, or a rubber mullen mouth bit.

So, over to you....ideas/advice etc greatly appreciated.
We're very proud of Jelly, and so we want this new chapter in her life to be a happy one.

Thanks guys

I'd pick a lozenge joint over a french link. I think a lot of horse prefer lozenge bits - 5 of the horse on my yard (all aged 4/5/6) are all in these - and they are a nice bit IMO. Have you tried different metals too?x

I usually start my youngsters in just a plain eggbutt snaffle or a rubber snaffle. But as youre not keen on nutcracker bits I would suggest something like the copper KK bits with the losenge. They are very nice for youngsters to 'feel' and will encourage her to salivate and take a contact and the loose ring will mean she cant take such a hold on it and run off!

what about a correctly fitted running martingale instead?

This is working well on his highness who is being introduced to schooling for the first time at the grand age of 7. He likes to stick his ears up your nose cross his jaw and trot off across the arena. Think he's part shetland really.

You know, in the excitement of actually seeing someone on her back I hadn't thought of that!

LMAO....that is just like her naughtiness, except she likes to chuck in a kind of frog leap forwards before she naffs off!

Thanks guys....I htink it's safe to say that she definitely doesn't like the french link AT ALL, and seems to prefer, or rather goes better in, the eggbutt, despite my reservations in that regard.

Have had a look at the neue shule tranz beval bit as this has the lozenge, but if she hates the frnech link so much, will the lozenge be any better?

xx

The old test - lay an french link across your arm and get someone to pull on it. It will hurt. A lozenge - won't.
The Tranz (or any other rounded lozenge) does not suffer from the major design flaw of the French Link. When a contact is taken with the French Link there are two proud semicircles either side of the flat link which dig into the tongue - this often discourages a true contact. Compare the feel between the Tranz and the French Link by wrapping them both around your upper arm and try to imagine how much more sensitive the tongue is. The Tranz Link is ergonomically designed for both comfort and communication. This design is a very popular dressage mouthpiece. It encourages a true contact and higher level of responsiveness. The lozenge is set on at an angle activating more feel over the tongue, so when a contact is taken, the rounded lozenge rolls down contouring smoothly over the tongue, utilizing feel but not abusing it, thereby enabling clearly defined aids to be given through the reins.
