bitting suggestion for youngster

what bits would you reccomend for a rising 4 yr TB.

currently shes ridden in an eggbutt snaffle, also tried her in a lossing ring french link snaffle. She doesnt seem happy in either bit tbh, is very mouthy, pulls her head to floor, corsses jaw, throws head up etc - shes had everything checked includding her teeth about 2 weeks ago all is fine. she only worked 3 times a week sometimes not that, so maybe its just her getting used to it.

she deff doesnt seem happy so any bit suggestions appreciated, nothing harsh, something soft.

shes also ridden with a loose flash on !!
 
My mare 4yr old TB hated the eggbut so i changed it to the loose ring snaffle with lozenge and she goes alot better in it now.
Got mine from the bit bank so if its no good you can exchange it

Other than that i would try a thin mouth, lozenge link loose ring and consider wrapping it in latex for cushioning. Dont use any form of flash/drop noseband and give her time to get used to it with soft hands when ridden.

Most mouth conformation can accomodate that bit but it would be adviseable for you to assess her mouth conformaion anyway.
 


has she raced? if it is then maybe a bit of time and nice schooling might just help her settle in her head. It'll take a few dedicated weeks to get her used to having a constant contact, try not to fight her but work with her -
how does she lunge when bridled?
 
she has raced yes not too logn ago, so a steady process to re educate her really. she does the same thing with her mouth pretty much as soon as she has the bit in which makes me think it is more of a bitting issue rather than schooling ( even though she is being started right back at basics)

will go get a thin mouth piece see if that helps, are they not more sever though??
 
to be honest I'd chuck in a loose ring snaffle (which is most likely what she would have raced in) and persevere with her schooling being slow and patient. it would seem pointless to change lots of things like bit when she will be perfectly fine in a nice light bit after a bit of schooling. she's probably more used to not having a contact and wanting to evade it and throwing the head around is a pretty good evasion.

Also - she'll probably've not had too much in the way of nosebands/flashes on. I'd take it off - the flash at least, and keep the noseband light.

okies thanks for that, if it helps when she was in racing she wore a flash and a dexter ring bit - only know as i bought her from the race trainer

My friends horse hated bits with any kind of join. We ended up switching him to a happy mouth straight bar loose ring snaffle and he settled immediatley. No more head tossing, no mouth open.
 
I ride my 5 year old TB in a neue schule loose ring snaffle with lozenge. He is like a different horse. I would never have believed that a bit would make such a difference (I always blamed my riding) but it is great, he is so soft and round with it when before he was hollow and always fighting me. It is also nice and warm, even in the winter.

I got rid of the flash as well and i tend to use thin bits for his small TB mouth. I used one of the on line bit banks, which let you trial bits. It is money well spent and it allows you to get the perfect fit and bit for your horse.
 
My young mare had blind wolf teeth earlier this year and did the same sort of thing she was fine once they were removed. I like the myler snaffle bits.

Also if you tense through your arms and shoulders this can cause problems too. My mare likes to be ridden with contact if I loose the contact or become unbalanced she will toss her head I think she sees it as a kind of security.
