My TB is currently going really well, couldn't be happier with his fitness, attitude etc. However, what with him feeling very chipper at the moment, especially as he's fit and very up for everything, I'm struggling to hold him when we do faster work, particularly out hacking or in company! He really grabs hold of the bit and tanks. He is still controllable, and really has quite a nice mouth, but what with a few sessions of hunting and cross country coming up soon I'd like to give him a bit of a reminder that he can't just grab and pull once adrenalin takes over from manners!
He is currently in a straight bar happy mouth loose ring snaffle, so I think we have a long way to go before I can be accused of using 'quick fixes' and shoving in a harsh bit instead of doing the necessary schooling... ;) I was only really thinking of the 'next step up' really, some form of jointed snaffle- maybe even just temporarily. I am more than happy to have a bit of a schooling crashcourse in conjuction with bit change as a reminder of what 'stop' means, and have already started this, and I try not to canter in the same places out hacking etc etc so he doesn't start to anticipate. He's generally polite, but, like I say, is fit, keen and stronger than me, and hence can be a bit of a thug once given the opportunity for speed!
He has the typical large TB tongue and small mouth.
Haven't ever really had to change bits so not done much experimenting, but I do know he doesn't like single jointed bits. Think maybe they pinch his big fat tongue. :p
Maybe a Waterford mouthpiece...? I know this is can be a harsh bit, but 'a bit is only as harsh as the hands using it' or whatever the phrase is! :o Think it may be too much for him though.
So, in a nutshell: suggestions for wayward TB who needs a reminder about pulling. Wouldn't say he leans as such, just pulls, although I guess he has been a little more 'leany' since the sudden revelation that he *can* use his bum and canter with his head down, releasing over his back, rather than just lugging himself along with his front legs and shoulders!
Thanks very much, Cadburys chocolate mousse and Nescafe on offer :o

My TB (in my sig picture) can get e bit rude& strong sometimes. I tend to swap him between a hanging cheek (french cheek mouthpiece) & a loosering with a french link. When he's being particularly rude he spends a week doing some basic schooling in a loosering waterford.

fwiw, I've found mine won't go in anything with a single joint. Good luck, I hope you find a bit to suit.
