Bizarre comment tonight from fellow livery...!

I spend 20 mins just warming up. I couldn't understand a comment in another thread about a horse who couldn't/wouldn't work in an outline until ridden for 20 mins, I wouldn't even ask until after 20 mins

Eep! One reason I hate riding other peoples horses - you're likely to do something that they don't! You certainly were nicer to her than I probably would have been ;)

I know. I really had to bite my tongue and have done ever since, particularly as she hasn't once asked me how I am since the fall which was due to her using about 10 gallons of canter coat shine on the horse a few days before!

She asked me what stage I thought the mare's education was at and I just said 'very green. like a just-backed youngster' which it is, but she didn't like too much! lol! ho hum! She could have a nice horse there but instead she's going to continue returning from shows 'not knowing why she wasn't placed!'

I am seeing a lot of folk are like that now tho. My dads neighbours kid rode my horse the other day as I said he needed to do some work - ive hurt back and cant ride him for more then 10 mins. But they did the same thing - 15 mins of work then that was it! They seem to be of the opinion that if its longer it should be a hack!

I used to ride for over an hour most days.......The 20-30 mins the girls give the horses now means they are no where near fit enough.

Well if its any help, I school my 20 year old veteran for 1 Hour schooling sessions and our hack yesterday was for 3 hours, I like to keep him ticking over!

I suspect the other person just wanted to use the school without you being in it.

I did used to keep mine on a v.cliquey yard where I once got interogated on where I had been as I had been of the yard for more than 1 hour....I did gently point out that I had been on a hack and it was kind of my business really.

i dont think its too long at all, i think some people just cant be bothered. ill admit some days i do only ride for 20 or 30 mins if hes worked particularly hard during the week or depending on what im doing with him. i think 20 - 30mins structured work long and low and only in walk and trot its beneficial (well for mine anyway) but if im properly schooling i ride for about 40- 45 mins too, including a proper warm up and cool down and breaks

so IMO youre not doing anything wrong lol

Her loss then I guess :/ Hope you're ok after your fall, doesn't it say somewhere on the bottle of that stuff something like 'don't use on the saddle area'?!

Yay for oldies! :D I think it's brilliant that at 20 he's still capable of that :)

Bizarre! What is it with people needing to know every detail I wonder?

i'd love to be on your yard, yesterday i took taz out for a three hour hack and he was still bouncing like an idiot when we got back to the yard, and galloped round the field when he got put out haha, now as for riding for twenty minutes its not even worth tacking up for why not just lunge instead

I need to be locked up as I'm an evil wicked woman who abuses her horses.:D

A SHORT hack for me is about 1 hour. I have been know to be gone all afternoon. I also like to feel that I've gone somewhere and have found some lovely places to school while out on a hack. Schooling doesn't need to be confined to an arena/manege.

Haven't done this for a while as mare has a foal this year so we'll need to build up slowly when we start again.

I'd like to point out for everyone saying 'why bother tacking up for 20 mins?' that i do....I only school for 20 mins-ish as otherwise I get bored and run out of ideas, however as neither of my boys are eventers, show horses or anything then thats fine for them. My standard hack only takes half hour max, and i don't lunge instead as i prefer riding to lunging, and so do the boys.

But i'd never say someone was tacking too long, esp if they'd only been at it for 45 mins or so.

We can only book half hour slots in our school, so I have no choice but to school for less than that.
IMO (for my horse) that is plenty - 5 -8 mins warm up, 5 mins cool down, the rest schooling. Does it really matter what everyone else is doing, unless they are contavening any yard rules/being rough with their horses? If someone's only happy schooling for 15 minutes, fine - it's their horse. And the same if someone's only happy schooling for 1 1/2 hours -fine. As long as they don't hog the school, leave poo / jumps everywhere or break any yard rules, it's fine.
Live and let live, and all that :)
