Took my young horse to a Novice BD today, and for the give and retake rein in canter got:

6: "unsteady contact"

Erm, thought that was the whole point

What's the most bizarre comment you've had?

Is that the phonetic version of "Older man's trot"?!

Were you using a zimmer frame in your medium tror by any chance?!

No, it is a very old term for a hollow trot with the head too high. Took me weeks to find what is meant. The judge was in his 80's though...

Which Novice were you doing?

It is quite possible that the comment was for the canter in the rest of the movement, as G and R is not the whole movement.

No chance of me getting that one then - my horse seems to be stuck in 'grazing position' we are just hoping next year's test replace 'give and retake the rein' with 'show a few steps of rolkhur'

I have also had "entering at collected canter not required at this level" and a remark about my sliding stop in N30 (you have to come back from MC, to WC, WT, to halt in a very short distance.

N33

Yes , fair enough, there is some working canter in the movement too, and my horse is not that steady in the rein to be honest, did make me snigger tho . . .

Was completely justified but I do love the comment I got at Addington once

"2 - Clean changes but not required at this level - well sat!"

Was meant to be giving and retaking rein over X when pony exploded on me he proceeded to do two flying changes and a bronc. Made a more exciting novice test to say least

i had a bizzare one, at the end of the comments section.......nice horse just a pity it has sweetitch???????? i was riding a hogged cob, but what does sweetitch have to do with dressage?!! p.s it doesn't have sweetitch at all!!

Took 4 yr old to her first ever prelim test and she took a dislike to the canteen window which stretched down the side of the indoor arena.... (Highcross EC Leicestershire)

Whilst perfoming certain movements at the window side, comments continously said, Travers and half pass not required at this level..... and then on the free walk (heading towards the canteen window) she stopped dead and stood straight up on her hind legs...... Judge wrote RELUCTANT!!!!!! mmmmmm!!!!

OH got a 6 and 'better' for a trot/walk/trot transition in a PN test once. Whats bizarre about that you may ask....

well he actually forgot to do it and just trotted straight past the marker (which was C I might add so was right in front of the judges car).

We had a good laugh about it later as I really ate him for losing marks and forgetting test when he came out of the ring.

My sister once left the arena in canter and the horse jumped back in over the white boards right in front of the judges car! Don't think judge noticed as she gave her a 7 for that bit!

I was doing a Novice test on my mare, and there was a G&R on a canter circle, the canter was rather unbal to say the least but I still proceeded to give and retake, the audience in the gallery all gasped and lent back as they thought we were coming through!!! The mark was 5 'Brave'!!!!

I had a few on one particular horse that was a bit of a lazy git. I often got " lovely energetic test" despite me having to do a few well placed pony club kicks in the test.. maybe the judge was referring to MY energy levels!

Think my favourite one was "circle too round"!!! How the hell can a circle be too round!!

Have had a couple which i have sent to british dressage with videos - they seriously had no correlation to the tests!!

My first 'dressage horse' was rather naughty to say the least. Came in in collected canter , perfect halt, then bolt up right, waved front legs at the judge, landed perfectly square..... Judges comment... some resistance at x... 1.

When stallion was 5yrs took him to Addington , changing the rein on the diagonal in canter did th most lovely pirouette leaving me going in the wrong dirrection.... Igot 'error of course!!! -2

Friend of mine got a great comment in the summary at the botton....'your pony really has the X-factor!'
Not sure how relevant that is but made us laugh!

I did my first ever dressage test in October last year with my 4yo (our first outing). He took great exception to something at the side of the arena, and we entered up the centre line doing shoulder-in facing scary obejct, and it all went downhill from there. I got hilarious comments "lateral movements not required in W+T test", "left track" (well, er, yes, in fact we joined the track on the other side of the arena in an enormous "monster avoidance" episode). Bearing in mind we spent most of the test facing the scary monster (which required quite a lot of sideways and backwards movement, a few spins) and just general panickyness, I got lovely comments at the end "lovely, obedient horse" (!), "some tension but accurate movements"(!).

Just goes to show that judges are very encouraging at grass roots level!

"lateral walk" didn't know what it meant at the time and not 100% now!
