My friend commented on the yellow dots all over my boy. She said that they were fly eggs and once hatched, they would bury into my horses skin. I was advised to pick them off. I just assumed that it was pollen..

Is this true? If so, what happens to the horses that no one bothers visiting regularly?

Said horse also has a runny eye due to flies bugging him but make him wear a fly mask and he turns into houdini - any ideas? I've also heard something about a cold tea bag?!

Does your friend mean they are bot eggs?

They are small and white and tend to be on the legs but may be all over. They don't burrow into the skin, the horse licks the egg, which hatches in the stomach and the larvae then burrows out, leaving an open sore on the horses back.

I am thinking that these as others have said are Bot eggs, which are not good and must be removed on a regualar basis have attached a link with alot more information for you, hope it helpshttp://www.equi-therapy.net/equi-therapy/horse-veterinary/bot-eggs-larvae.shtml

Cold tea bags are very good for runny eyes, just use one per eye and use them as you would damp cotton wool, to clean the grubby bits.

The fly eggs could well be Bott fly eggs, nasty b'stards. They are usually laid in a place where the horse will groom and lick itself, the eggs then get swallowed and gestation of the larvae starts inside the horse.

You need to remove every single egg and you can get a Bott fly knife, with a special curved blade to do the job. Alternatively, just pick them off by hand. It's time consuming, but necessary.

yea when i bought my pony his legs were coverd get them off asap you can get a bot knife to get them off easily

i have on like this works really well you can get them everywhere and they are cheap too

They are tiny, on his legs and need to be picked off so are quite heavily attached.

I felt like a right weirdo posting that as I thought it couldn't possibly be true. He seems to attract more flies than the others :(

Should I put his fly rug on him in the meantime..although if they stick to the legs mainly I can't see that this would make much difference.

My friend has one of them. I feel like such a novice now! Better to ask than to have let him suffer though :)

Thank you. I'll take some up tomorrow :)
