I was on my yard today and this bloke drove on in a van. He asked who the horses belonged to that were in our field and I told him that they were mine. Then he asked me if the coloured horse was broken into harness... I was a bit wary but told him no (Despite the fact that he was as a 3 year old). He then got a wod of cash out of his pocket and asked me how much I would take for him... In the end he offered me 7K but I told him that he wasn't for sale... Bizzarre or what.... (But I turned on the CCTV on the yard and locked the gates tonight!)

That's good. If it was his vehicle... If the horse isn't freezemarked then I'd do that pronto. And definitely up security as the other posters have said. I'd be worried to death by this.
 
If its the coloured hoss in your sig I'm not surprised, he is gawjuss. Although I would be sleeping in the stable too :(
 
I would be staying there tonight too.
A few years back we had a traveller in a back garden (not sure if he was a traveller in your case-but sounds very similar situation-dont want to offend anyone! I just knew he was as he was well known in our area). We was asking to buy our trailer, got out money- way more than it was worth, but told him to @*?& off our land.
That night the car and trailer were stolen, I dont think he was there to make a genuine offer on the trailer he was there scounting the place.
It has also happened to a friend more recently.
 
We keep him at home -- He's 6 (he was broken to drive as a 3 year old). yard gate is locked both sides -- only way in and they have to drive past our house... We have a VERY BIG GSD as well... We're as secure as we can be but I am a bit concerned...
 
I would probably call the police in your situation, they may send a patrol car past at random times of the night and keep an eye out for the van reg.
 
On a more serious note, we have a coloured cob, but he has sweet itch, and has to be covered up in a fly rug all the time - most of out horses wear sweet itch hoodies from March to Oct. I guess thats a good thing - nobody can really tell what they are like when they're in the field. I've also taken all the pictures of them competing, and all the rosettes away from the yard - I'm not advertising how good they are to any thieves...
 
Hang on a minute - what is SO wrong about a man seeing a horse he likes & offering a decent amount of money for him. Jeez - if he was going to nick your horse why would he even bother to try and buy him in the first place.

OK so not everyone carries £7k around with them in their back pocket, but doesnt make him a criminal.

Everyone is so quick to judge.

Feel free to tell me otherwise/call me an idiot but I'd lay bets on your horse still being there in the morning.

Oh and seriously, the police have better things to be doing.....

The GSD or similar is a very good move for anyone with a stunning coloured. Our stable yard was the only local one not cleaned out by the local site (we know it was them as the postcoded rugs from the other yards used to appear on their horses afterwards :-))

The difference was we had 4 Rotties guarding the yard :-) The yard was 50 yards from the site. We were always being asked about the horses, it was amazing how many of them were sterile mares or vicious geldings.
 
I would ring your non emergency number, when we had a funny bloke down our yard they just sent their cop cars round whenever they had a free 5 mins. Trust me, in Glos, they have ALOT of free 5mins! I nearly invited them in for tea they were parked outside for most of the night lol!

There is nothing wrong with being safe rather than sorry. You've got to admit it's quite unusual, and surely you'd want to keep an eye if it was your horse. Hopefully you are right, but its hard, in this day and age, to trust strangers anymore.

You're right, the police probably won't come out, not their fault - they haven't enough officers. They didn't even come when all out tack got cleaned out in broad daylight. When I was living with a policeman, some nights there were only two officers on duty for a fairly large area.

I've had him about 4 weeks and it tooke me 7 months of hard looking to find him and he's an absolute super star -- Gone from working at prelim to elementary in that 4 weeks and started his lateral work -- he's got serious brains in his head with a great attitude -- And a great sense of humour -- He's the horse I've wanted for a LONG time - He's quite simply not for sale.

I had the same thing last year on my old yard........................................

caught them attempting to steal him 3 nights later when I let my dogs out for their last pee of the night. Our very large English Mastiff chased them off and pony was left wandering loose around the field. Be vigilant for the next few nights, we had 3 gates padlocked and security lights.
 
Probably perfectly innocent, but I would log the details you have with your local police station, and if it means a few more police cars passing your place, while they are out, all well and good. It may even put someone else off thinking about doing anything dodge in your area! Cant do any harm.

Very similar thing happened to me about 5 years ago. Out of the blue someone walked into yard (which was in a private garden) and offered to buy a 11hh section a who had a roach back and although sweet wasnt the nicest horse on the yard.
My cautious head took over and I asked the YOs to lock their drive gate. Sadly they told mde it would be too inconvenient to get in and out of their car, so said no.

2 days later my trailier was stolen. Thankfully the horses were not. I spoke to local Horsewatch PC and he confirmed the ' I want to buy your horse' is a well known excuse to case the place to check security etc.
