Bot flies are such a pain. My boy is on small paddock rest and today the lady near my field phoned me at work to say he was going mad, running about and throwing himself on the floor and was all black with sweat......10 mins later, after a quick conversation with my very understanding boss, i was at the field to see bot flies attacking him, i took great pleasure in killing them and washed him off, moved his small paddock as he had a 6 inch deep track round the edge. I need to stop them as he is recovering from hind suspensory damage and DDFT issues in front.....any ideas please help me before all the work and money spent in the last 10 weeks goes down the drain

thanks

Is it possible for him to be brought in during the day when flies are at their worst? they have been really awful this year.

The problem with this is that to get to his stable involve quite a long walk over gravel, which is not good for his feet and the vetinary issues he has with them and then when in after an hour or so he worries and walks the box even with his best friend for company, although this may be slightly preferable to throwing himself on the floor! Seem to be at a loss which ever way at the momnet. Maybe i should try mid morning til early afternoon in, when the little Bu**ers seem to be most avtive

My ponies do exactly the same - run around like nutters, and jump out of the field if they can.

I haven't found any spray that deters bot flies either.

It's a nightmare : o(

I have a bottle of spray (bot free - or something like that, black and yellow bottle, by lincoln I think) and I have yet to see any eggs on my ponios. Whether it works or not I can't say (it's quite good for ordinary flies and midges) but I tell you, it tastes foul. Not that I've tried it on purpose, just when I've been spraying it on while standing downwind...
