Black Beauty

i watched it not long ago on dvd! i love it so much. merry legs always reminded me of my first pony :D i think it really shows what kind souls horses really are. the ending is so emotional when beauty is thinking of his old friends :(

and there is the modern black beauty, totilas, i often think about that horse, where he is and what he feels and thinks, and does he get out of the stable much.

Re: bearing reins. The problem is not the rein itself, which can be a very sensible safety device, the point AS was making was against the fashion to have them over-tight to make the horses look 'spirited'.

Used sensibly (and not for a horse in heavy draft) it should not interfere with a horse's way of going (like a properly fitted standing martingale) and can prevent a horse getting it's rein tangled in the pole-head, which was the cause of many fatal accidents.

My favourite book of all time, and so far ahead of its time. Not a sentimental children's tale but a piece of social history comment on both how horses and the poorest humans lived at the time. I think I know all the words off by heart too as I've read it so often. If you get a chance to buy the Annotated Black Beauty (big coffee table book) do, it's full of interesting side facts about ostlers, carriages, bearing reins and other things that the book covers.

I met and spent some time with Ginger in the stable - or the horse that played the adult Ginger in the movie, who was actually a stallion(!).

I can't even watch it anymore as I just turn into a hysterical, sobbing mess.

Same reason that I can't watch War Horse... or the Horse Whisperer... or Marley and Me...

Even hearing the music makes me well up. I'm a useless human being!

I cried buckets when I read 'Marley and me'!

Love this book/film. The bit that gets me most is the horse market at the end. I find myself shouting at Joe to turn round. Although like others I spend alot of the film in tears
