Black but passport says Grey?

I think I probably know the answer to this but how late can horses turn grey? We've got a 2nd viewing on a black mare the next few days, her passport and registration information ive found online says she's grey...but is very definitely black! She's 8yrs old.

I assume when her passport was made she was black and they assumed would turn grey? Dad is grey, can't find anything about mum but have found a full brother online who is definitely dapple grey...

Does it matter that its wrong on the passport? Markings looked correct but I'll obviously get the vet to check and scan for microchip if we proceed to vetting.

Should we ask the ISH people who she is registered with to change the passport if we buy her?

It can be late (as in not much to show by teens) but that's pretty unusual/mostly related to specific lines

They can get lighter as they age. Black is black though have you had a good look at her head especially round the eyes and muzzle? If she’s correctly registered with the ISH they Should have correct history, looking on line except on the official society page may not give you correct info.

By age 8 there would definitely be signs of greying out. Is the seller the breeder? They should be able to get it amended easily.

My more cynical self says get the vet to check the microchip against the paperwork, might not match!

I had a black mare who was passported grey. She was actually born very dark grey and it was assumed she's get lighter, but she got darker! Coal black all her life.

Black foals are often born a sort of buff/greyish foal coat maybe there was some confusion. Conversely grey foals on a black base can be born hyperpigmented and jet black.

My colt says Grey (born chestnut) on his passport as thought he would grey out. Yearling now and he got really ginger and its now a weird assortment of colours, is if there is a post in a few years time about a gelding that says grey on its passport but is some weird ginger hybrid colour don't blame me!

Monty my old share horse's passport said bay roan. He was very definitely grey. Nobody ever questioned it other than to remark on how greys are born a different colour. With her being the other way round though, you might get queries. As long as the chip number's ok, I wouldn't worry too much about it. I would expect some signs of greying out by 8. M took quite a long time - we lost him at 27 and even then he wasn't completely white as he was very fleabitten - but was a dark steel grey at 8.

Ok I will get the vet to check microchip, pony has competed abroad so should all be ok but you never know!
