Am thinking of getting horse a new saddle as my current saddle is too bulky under the thigh and I'm struggling to get my legs round my turbo cob!!

So its been suggested that I try a Black Country GPD. Have done a bit of research - its within the budget and looks like its the sort that would suit him. Big shoulders & short coupled. Are they supportive enough to jump in? I need something with nice knee rolls which isn't too bulky but has enough flocking in to be able to hunt all day in.

If anyone has any knowledge of them, I'd be very grateful.

We had a black Country saddle (I think gpd) for our old idxtb who also had big shoulders and was short coupled. I found it a v nice saddle and fitted him well. We used it to jump with and had no problems though didn't jump all the time or competitively. I bought it from eBay for a bargain (had been recommended by our saddler who checked it afterwards) so worth keeping an eye out for :)

I'm unlikely to jump bigger than 1m show jumping and I guess the same out hunting although the odd hedge. I just want to be comfy and not so far away from my horse!!

I have just bought a GP Black Country for my mare, had it on trial for a few days and paid last week. very comfy and my mare goes better in it than the field house she was in that I am selling as it does not fit her now

A GPD/VSD isn't ideal for jumping in unless you have a short hip to knee measurement - big shoulders, correctly fitted, don't always need a straight cut saddle, if that's why the GPD was recommended. I would recommend looking for something more forward cut if you can. If you need a larger seat size relative to his back length then the straighter cut CAN help but there are better ways of tackling this with a flatter, or wider, seat, and a shorter panel design like an upswept style.

You are actually on my list of people to contact!!
Horse is a 15.1hh coloured ISH but quite cobby with big shoulders. He can't take longer than 17" which is fine for me. His current saddle is a working hunter saddle with a forward cut flap on the top. It seems to be really bulky underneath - big panels so I am struggling to sit to his canter jumping because I can't get my legs round him. The forward cut flap is actually useless because it presses inwards onto his shoulder and doesn't support my knees.

I just want something that isn't bulky, I can jump/dressage and hunt in and makes me feel secure. What would you recommend?

Sorry, missed this! I'm obviously not allowed to mention models etc but I'm afraid so much is down to your individual build and how the saddle is structured. It could be any factor making the current saddle feel bulky. For instance not all cobs need wide twists, and on the wrong horse it can push your leg away from the ribcage. In most cases a higher set thigh block, rather than knee block, helps a lot.
