Went out to check on my mare in the field earlier and was chasing a fly off her belly when I noticed her teats were covered in little black eggs and there were a few little flies all over them. I cleaned all the eggs off with a cloth.*squirm*
After a while there were little specks of blood, perhaps where the flies had bitten her? :(
I've never seen this before, what are these flies and how can I stop them laying their eggs all over my poor pony?

Were they definately black eggs and not dried spots of blood from where they had been biting?

Stick something greasy on her udder, like vaseline - stops the little buggers.

Are you sure they were eggs?
They may have been ticks or keds, if there was blood, it was something like that feasting on your mares blood. :(

I think it sounds like dried blood from the fly bites rather than eggs, I use sudocreme on the boys 'bits' to soothe as needed and also D'itch as I find that is greasy enough and smelly enough to keep the flies away.

Thanks, I hadn't thought about the dried blood thing, and it's probably a possibility. Will put wash he udder tomorrow and put some vaseline on and see how that works. :)

This ^^. Horrid isn't it, those black flys are evil. I wipe my mare over around her udders/midline/top inside of back legs etc with a damp sponge once a week and them put this on http://www.snuggyhoods.com/index.ph...op-Salve-Complete/Detailed-product-flyer.html
It actually works! Nothing else I have found keeps the blighters off without spraying it on loads of times a day.

Hello,
As I'm in France these bl**dy flies have been and gone. They are usually the first biting insects of the year. I will say that it's definitely dried blood. Baby oil will keep them off. You will probably find they are biting in the ears too. If your mare is shaking her head, this will be the case. When you rub the little scabs off you will get a little blood. The good thing is these flies don't hang around for many days and will soon be gone. Then we can all look forward to horse flies, ticks, bots all good fun
