but where do you buy them?Pet shop? Do you feed them with the shells on? Are they special seeds or ordinary black shelled sunflower seeds?

You can generally get them in any countrystore which sells animal feed. I gather they are available in the bird seed section in England, over here they are in the horse feed section as they are so widely fed here.

You feed complete and in shells - the shells are a good source of fibre so shouldn't be discarded.

I've fed these for a couple of years now and all of my guys look terrific at all times - glorious shiny coats but the main reason I feed them is because of the difference in horn growth on my lot. Their feet have a very tough life over here but the BOSS keep them looking wonderful.

Thanks for that, I'll check out the local agriculture cum gardening cum equine store

at the weekend. Our farrier says her hooves are in very good shape but they do split from the nails down in summer. Maybe BOSS can help? I'll check out a small bag if they supply them

Nighty night all

Tia got me started on these just over a year ago.

Initially great improvement in coat - very soft and shiney and they do say they help with dark coats staying dark.

This summer I have not needed to put shoes on Cairo as his feet are a lot stronger. I also now need to have them both trimmed every 7 - 8 weeks instead of 9 weeks as their feet are growing faster and my farrier grunts when he cuts the hoof back as they are so tough.

Do everything as Tia says - feed whole etc. I get mine from the bird section in the feed store and pay £7.50 for 15k.

Chancer - 15 hand gypsy cob and Cairo - 16.3 clydesdale both get the same - 1 big mug in each feed and they have two feeds a day.

I don't feed any mix - just Simple Systems products which they really do compliment.

I was feeding 2 mugs a day, but cut it down to one as he isnt doing much work and is out 24/7 and doesnt need much if any extra feed.

I am confident they are doing good, but he always had good feet and he shines like a demon anyway!!!

I do wonder if sunflower oil in the feed would do the same thing though..... thats what i used to feed.

Hudson has been on them for some time now, he cast a shoe the other day and in the past he would usually end up with huge chips out of his hoof, not this time, once i got him in his hoof was as good as when the farrier last did him, and my friend put the shoe back on for me. Yes he does have his grade 3 so it is all above board. Not only that they also love the seeds, if you feed from your hand they are really funny to watch eating something so small especially when they get the seeds stuck round their gums.

I was just wondering if they have a high starch content as i have a horse with cushings who is prone to laminitus so too much starch would be a bit of a no no!!
