I'm looking to buy a show jacket for mostly eventing (unaff at the moment), but also some local shows, such as sj and dressage comps - maybe even a little ROR showing class if I'm feeling brave!

I currently have a grey tweed jacket, but it now clashes with my grey horse and would love a nice new one!

My fixed peak cap is black (I have a skull cap too so could wear that with a black or blue velvet silk), I prefer wearing white breeches and I have black gloves currently. Tack is black, boots are black. I think navy is very smart and traditional but I'm leaning towards black as it might be easier to match.

I ideally want to look smart, and I'm worried all this black and white on a grey might look tacky! Maybe I should go for a colour?!

Thoughts? (And any recommendations?)

I'd say navy, I think it looks smarter than black and like you said, I think you'll look a bit too monochrome in a black jacket along with all the other black!

I would buy a nice green or brown tweed they are more correct for showing and basically accepted for most lower level competitions, but if your he'll bent on a plain colour go for navy it looks much nicer than black on a female.

This, for showing a tweed is correct and it will be fine for all lower level competitions, it used to be the rule that tweed was worn but the rules were relaxed some years ago because competitors did not abide by them so rather than enforce they changed the rules so now almost anything seems to be worn but showing has stayed with tradition.

Just seen you wear white breeches, they are never correct in the show ring so you may be investing in 2 sets of show gear if you decide to do ROR classes.

I'd personally go black with a black hat, black boots & black gloves.

I prefer navy, but I wouldn't personally wear this with black gloves & a black hat.

It depends how plain you want your jacket. I have a lovely black jacket with turquoise blue velvet collar and pocket flaps. I wouldn't wear it for showing (tweed and beige jods for that), but it looks very smart and the colour just lightens the black if you know what I mean. My horse is black and white, so it also relieves the monochrome effect of us both.

Or do what I did and get both !!

Many, many years ago I was told off by a judge for wearing white jods in a showing class at my local RC show. In fact she only let me continue as I was also doing some of the show jumping classes on the same day and had hacked there.

For lower level competition I prefer to wear tweed.

Thank you all for your replies!

Sorry yep for showing would stick to my grey/navy tweed jacket and cream jods but (as you can see!) its really not my forte!

I do think navy is smart, but black perhaps more practical! I think I shall have to try lots on and buy what looks best! I do have my mum's very traditional (and ancient!) navy jacket so I guess I could get black and then I have both.. or I might have to do the same as you eggs :D

Apart from the issue of tradition I think black looks very harsh next to most complexions, navy is much more flattering
