Hi, just wondering if all black leather saddles stain your breeches when it rains, or if anyone has one that doesn't or what are the best treatments and care to avoid this?
all saddles do it really
and its not just the saddle
however much you clean them they build up a layer of dirt/grease (to an extent) and it rubs of on you!!!
If its cheap leather then any colour will come off on you in the wet. Quality dyed, well made good leather tack shouldnt leach dye. I have both black and brown saddles, craftsman made in the UK and neither colour has come out on my clothes.
Spaniel beat me to it!
The cheaper leather can be "fixed" with a product called Resolene, made by Fiebings, don't think I have any left but you might be able to get some from a shoe shop. I use it on cheaper tack that leeches dye out onto the horse and please do remember, the majority of the leather who's colour runs is dyed using aniline dyes (though not all but better be safe than sorry) aniline dyes are proven to be carcinogenic, so may not be safe for you or your horse to come into contact with the dyes for any length of time. The dye goes in to your skin through your pores, we have to use thick gloves and well ventilated areas when using any of these dyes, they really are not very nice. Resolene puts a permanent fix on them to stop them running out of the leather, the only down side is the leather then looks quite shiny but I know what I would rather have, shiny leather rather than aniline dyes on my skin!
Hope this helps, Oz
I've had the same problem but with suede knee rolls. It is a quality English bespoke leather saddle (walsall) so i dont think its an indication of quality when dye transfers. (only my opinion)
i was recommended a spray from the cobblers that you use on suede shoes to waterproof them.
good tip for vanish spray i must get some.
It IS a indication of quality and most people havn't a clue where their leather came from (yes even supposedly quality leathers) or how it is produced. I have many hides in my workshop, all of which are selected by myself, I only use the top quality English hides available, including suede, none of which have ever leeched the dyes out. It is badly made leather that leeeches dyes out and it doesn't have to just be foreign leathers that do that, if it's badly made it doesn't matter where it comes from, it's just badly made!
