Hi all,

My horse had a hole dug into the sole of his foot by the farrier to drain the 'poison' out of it. I have been hot poulticing it, however there is now this black stuff coming out? Is this just puss or is the poultice drawing other substances out of his hoof? If it's puss ill pop another hot poultice on and see what it's like in the morning otherwise i will just wash with saltwater and dress it.

Many thanks
Sam :)

It's the poultice doing it's job.

My mare had an abcess only a couple of weeks ago. Had it opend up by the farrier. Was instructed to hot poultice twice a day until the poultice was clean and to hot tub her foot in a bucket of hot water with epsom salts each time I changed the poultice. I done this for 3 - 4 days. Then I dry poulticed for a couple of days and was instructed pop a few grains of copper sulphate in the hole and fill with keratex hoof putty.

Worked a treat and mare saw farrier today and he was dead pleased with her.

Thankyou for the replies!! I am continuing to hot poultice the hoof twice a day as there is still quite a bit of gunk coming out of it (poor horse). He wont let me tub his foot so ive resorted to mixing hot salt water and syringing it into the hole.. seems to be working so far!
Samhorse, where do you get copper sulphate from?
Thanks
Sam

I got the copper sulphate from my farrier. Yours should be able to get hold of some. I shall ask mine where he gets it from and report back. If you can't tub it then it may be worth you putting some epsom salt in the hot water when you soak the poultice x

Stop the wet poulticing. Tubbing is the best treatment, syringing unfortunately wont be nearly as effective. Then fill the sole with dry epsom salts and bandage over. As for copper sulphate, be a bit careful using it as depending how deep your abscess is you may get solar prolapse (wet poulticing too much can do this too).
