Can anyone tell me how you find out if a mare has black type? (Or is eligible for, if that’s the more correct way to word it).

Easiest way is if she's been through the sales and you can see it all listed in the catalogue.

Check sales records including for her progeny.
Otherwise buy a Catalogue style pedigree from somewhere like Equineline
