Please help!!!

My 14 year old mare had a healthy colt 6 weeks ago. On Thursday, her back legs were swollen and she was dragging her hind feet at the toe when walked, we noticed that she had ''leeked'' urine too and on further investigation her bladder was completely full. The urine was extracted and it was dark and thick. Since then, she has been on Anti boitics and pain killers, the swelling has gone down in her back legs (not 100% but prob 90%) and her movement has also improved (Not 100%) but she is still unable to empty her bladder. She is being catheterized in the day to relieve this. Vet has taken some bloods. There has been talk of a strain of Herpes but she is not displaying any other symptoms of this. She also looks really well, no other changes. She is going out briefly in the mornings so the foal can get out while it is dry. She is happy in herself, eating, pooing, happy to walk.

I am waiting for blood results.

Has anyone else heard of anything like this? I am trying to research on the internet and through friends but it seems rare...

Any thoughts, Please?

Hi,
Yes unfortunately, daughter's instructor's top BD horse went down with it last October. And I'm sorry to day it was not a happy ending.
It started very suddenly one morning when they noticed he was 'letting it all hang loose' and was dribbling. Vet was called and he had ABs & painkillers and ended up going into Leahurst for three weeks, where he was catheterised and drained every other day. After running up to the limit on the £5k insurance for treatment without success (livery bill paid seperately to help keep the treatment going) they allowed him to go home after own vet agreed to keep up the catheterising and draining.
Then at Christmas he went to Newmarket vet hospital and they tried allsorts to see if they could identify a cause or sure. Regrettably the camera put up inside showed his bladder was getting very ulcerated from the thick sediment and from holding onto the urine, so they said he had limited time. If you try calling the Newmarket vets they may be able to offer you some more advice as they definitely dealt with this case within the last six months.
He was pts on valentines day after they had tried and tried but his pain was getting worse :-(
