Hi ya

Has anyone ever had or known of a horse with bladder problems?

Basically for 10 weeks now my mare basically wee's herself, its like squirting. Which runs down her legs which in turn has scolded her legs, i have to clean her twice a days and cover her legs in vasaline to make a barrier..........

The vet is very stumpped, we've done tests and had the camera in to have a look and we're fast running out of options and things to try.............i was just wondering if anyone had any experriences as i have never known this before now!!

We've been on antibiotics for couple of weeks etc and we're still better, she's still happy in herself and looks really well its just this incontinance(spelling!!!)

My vet is now thinking that maybe she should go to them for a couple week and go on a cathitor to relax the bladder for a week then take her off it and then see if this will encourage her to do a proper wee or if this carries on.

Yeah and there was nothing on that, we've also had bloody, kidney, liver and white clood cells and they are all clear, its all very odd as it started suddenly, but its been on going for roughly 10 weeks now, we've had her on antibiotics and she's now on a course of steroids, the next step is the cathitor, then he has also mentioned a drug they use on dogs with bladder problems may be a possibility.

maybe she just fancies the chap in her field or next door and is tarting?? has vet not suggested regumate or an implant? if she is repeatedly squirting you could put a marble in her?

Has your vet done a neurological exam? Is she managing to pass faeces normally? Is there normal tone in her tail?

If your vet can't get to the bottom of it soon then I'd suggest asking for a referral to see a specialist.

Try giving your mare a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar every day. If she does have a bladder infection, this can definitely help clear it up. You can put it on a little grain and most horses will eat it.
Make sure your vet says it is OK to do so, and that she doesn't have ulcers.
You can put zinc oxide on her, which will protect her skin from getting scalded, reapply as necessary.

Did they test muscle enzymes in the blood (CK, AST and LDH)? If not, I'd have those done and ask for a copy of the full blood report "for future reference".

It's probably a total long shot but one of my geldings has dribbled urine on and off at various times, and 2 others went through phases of doing very very frequent tiny wees (about 4 wees in the space of a 1 hour gentle walk only schooling session). I'm working on theirs being a dietary selenium deficiency, which can cause muscle problems in various muscles. Some muscle diseases are known to affect bladder function, so it's not beyond the realms of possibility, but if you've run out of obvious things to check then it's relatively cheap to check the muscle enzymes and going from there.

Are there any other problems going on, or is it just the urine?

Sarah

My mare did this, when she came down with sudden onset Cushings/Insulence resistance :(

Try an ACTH test and glucose test.

Hope you sort it x

Thanks for the responses. I haven't done a lot with an actual vet up until this point but right now she has me draining her bladder daily with a catheter to see if the bladder muscles will tighten back up. She had a slight response to it, but only when I took the thing out so now I am thinking it could be a nerve issue. I will suggest the testing to the vet you mentioned and see if we can't move forward on a few more things.

Thanks all! Any more suggestions are appreciated. She is a great girl and I hate seeing her uncomfortable (bad urine scald on both legs).
