I'm about to finalise (fingers crossed) the details on my horse & hope for delivery very soon.
I'm pretty inexperienced as I haven't own a horse for over 10yrs & this will be my first since moving north, so I wanted to ask if anyone has any recommends please.
Off the top of my head I need

  • farrier, but would also like to look into finding a local EP as he's barefoot at present & trimmed by a farrier.
  • Vet
  • Feed supplies - I'm thinking Davidson?
  • Hay & straw - I haven't a clue

So far the only farrier I can find is Mr AN Chalmers Blairgowrie, anyone use him?

Anyone local would love to hear from you & find out the happy hacker spots.

Hi. First things first, fab to have another horsey person in the area - considering its so rural, there aren't that many horsey folk!
I'm between Pitlochry and Dunkeld, and my personal choices, which I would recommend:
Farrier: Neil Chalmers, who you've found already. Good farrier, does a good job. I don't have anything fancy, but he did a good job corrective-shoeing my friend's dodgy-footed horse too. I've found him as reliable as any farrier :0)
Vet: I use Harbit & Ryder, who have practises in Pitlochry and Aberfeldy. Ryder is an FEI vet who heads up the vet teamat Blair Castle 3DE - good enough for me! Not sure who else there is though, if you are Blairgowrie way you might need someone nearer.
Feed: Davidsons base in Blairgowrie, and delivery locally (inc Pitlochry) which is handy, and do livestock stuff too. McCash's in Perth are good, will order things in and hold them for you. Also do a limited amount of clothing, tack, supplements, etc, plus pet stuff, chicken feed etc. Also Country Corner in Perth.
Tack: As well as McCash's, there's Stirlingshire Saddlery and Kicking Horse in Perth.
Hay & Straw: like hens teeth. I'm lucky I get it from the farm where I'm a tenant.

Recommend Strathearn Riding Club - a small, but friendly bunch. Regular SJ lessons with Ernest Dillon, just getting regular XC lessons underway at Strathearn Eventing too, and competitions held at Gannochy in Perth.

Can't think of anything else, but feel free to ask more Qs and will try and help! Would say PM me, but a) I dunno how it works and b) happy to tell you everything I think in public!
