Found this whopper of a bite on my mare this morning. It doesn't seem to be annoying her but it's really hot. My YO thinks it's from the Blandford fly and we've had a few humans needing medical treatment for them in the local area.

Can't find anything showing what the bites look like on horses. Anyone come across them before?

Thanks for that - it does sound like it could be and this is my walking vet bill so obviously she would get bitten by something I've never heard of!

I live in Dorset and believe the Blandford Fly has been eradicated. Does look horrid though

Edited to add just Googled it and seems it’s back :-(

We had those on both sides of my Shetland earlier this year under her armpit by the girth. Took an age to go down.

Could it be a tick bite?

I don't know - I haven't seen a bite like it before. Its plastered in sudocream now but its still really big - but unlike horsefly bites she doesn't seem itchy with it.

This is the Appy though so the more weird the more likely . She hasn't spent my money at the vets for at least a fortnight.
