Blanket Clip or Full CLip????? Help

I started clipping at about 3.30pm today. God knows why I started at that time when it's dark by 4.30 but anyway... :eek:

I got one side of his neck done and will be finishing him off tomorrow. So do I go for a blanket clip or a full clip??

He tends to drop quite a lot of weight during winter, so last year I opted for a blanket clip and he certainly seemed to keep the weight on better.

Now did he keep the weight on because he was warmer or because he is more mature and can hold the weight more easily?


So what should it be, Full or Blanket? I think if I can keep him warmer then perhaps the full
 
I always fully clip - mine isn't good to do, its only been this year (of 10!) that shes not been sedated, so no lines is far easier.

I have plenty of rugs, and plenty of spares incase any get manky, with a variety of weights, necks, belly pads plus stable bandages. Adlib hay and good high fibre feeds do the trick with her.

lol...No I didn't start till 3.30 and it's been thick fog here all day so by about 4 it was nearly dark and the outside lights are no good at all for clipping. Could have done him inside but to much horse traffic :D

It normally takes me an hour to do a full clip and I thought I could have finished by 4.30 but it was dark much sooner
 
I agree, blanket clip until Jan then full if necessary.

By xmas he will be stabled and back into work - riding daily over xmas/new year then back to 2 x week, at the moment he is not getting clipped until he is stabled. I was thinking I'd do a full clip - leaving saddle cloth and half face and legs, however its been so long since i clipped a horse without sedatation I'd love some advice (sorry to steal thread!)

He is a 6yo ISH, a bit nervous with people but not me, I would rather sedate than twitch. so my quick questiona are - should I sedate before even trying, or try and see how he goes - I live with a vet so could get him to sedate if need be. Also do I get a friend to hold him - or get them to clip? I bought him from a dealer in March who had clipped him out fully - not sure how that went so no idea if he was twitched.

Any recommendations.
 
With my mare the first time she was clipped we went at her (friend clipping, me holding) until she wouldn't tolerate anymore then got my vet to dope her (IV sedation) as he was at the yard about to go for a hack. Had been hoping wouldn't have to dope as was told she was good to clip when I bought her but she behaved like she'd never seen clippers before.

If having to use sedalin or similar to dope then dope before trying or it won't work but if using IV can dope part way through.

OP - would blanket clip but if you've got good rugs and use an exercise sheet when riding would whip it all off (I can't stand hairy saddle cloths come Spring when they start shedding!).

Ohh We would all love to live with a vet, lucky you! :D

I would try first then sedate if need be. Someone mentioned Sedalin, give that a go too. I don't twitch either.

Well my blanket clip started off really well, lovely and neat and straight then I forgot I was doing one and zoomed the clippers straight up his bum!!! :eek:

So now he has a lovely hunter clip and warm snuggly rugs on :D
 
Living with a vet is very useful, but he is a small animal orthopaedic surgeon and isn't too horsey. he does vaccinate them, sedate if necessary and will jab with antibiotics but thats about it. he is useful when I need advice about getting a vet to look at wounds too!!

I suppose it saves me lots of bills too!

Clip to try then sedate is what I'll do!

Blanket clip, don't clip more than you have to, they have their winter coats for a reason.
We tend to do blanket or bib then jan/feb time we give them a full clip as can't stand casting and one of ours seems to keep his winter coat until june otherwise!! :p
 
ohhh depends if you compete.

could you bear to turn up at a show with a blanket clip hairy horse?

I know i couldn't so i opt for a duvet from tesco and hope for the best. Although I do appreiate what you've saying if youre pony will turn to a hat rack within days (I had one like that ) its not worth taking the lot off- if that helped at all? xx

you can always take more off, but equally if your horse gets cold he will just grow it back anyway - goodluck

He had a blanket clip last year. He has hardly any fur really and definitely not fluffy. He's had a hunter clip now and is wrapped up extra snuggly :)
