Well having only owned Chickens since the 15th May this year ( my birthday pressie) the bloody fox has taken one beautiful big brown Gersey Giant and my beautiful Buff Orpington young hen :(

They had been free range and loved pootling about the paddock and helping the horses eat their tea.

How do you stop the wicked fox. I am thinking of the electric fence route but it's so blinkin expensive and I'd have to buy another energiser and they are rather damned costly. This was supposed to be a stress free hobby :(
 
we found a cockeral on our yard today, no idea where he has come from, sorry no help on how to stop the fox, but could you have a look a the post 'unwanted guest' and try to 'name the breed' for me please???
 
Leccy fence is the only sure fire way of stopping them.
Could you perhaps keep them in a run unless you are around? Its the worst time of year now, the cubs are learning to fend for themselves.
Poor chookies.
 
in my experience the lecky fence is a waste of money- a local chap lost 30 odd ducks even though he had a fence-our chooks are free range and are everywhere they shouldn't be, did yours go in daytime?
 
iv had one taken this year. so they have been shut in there run untill a proper one his built for them, they were free ranging the yard and they do when i am down there but i dont risk leaving them out in the day when im not.
 
Mine are in at night - about 7.30pm and out about 7.30am.

Yes they were taken this afternoon between 3 and 5 pm. Loads of feathers from the big brown girl so I bet she put up a fight my poor girl.

So if the electric fence isn't worth the money the only option is a chicken wire run which is rather unsightly :(

I can feel for you, we're currently chicken-less for the first time in over 8 years. We lost half our flock to a fox that came over the fence (so we added a line of electric round the top, so when the electric gate across the yard entrance is shut (when we're not down there) it connects up. Then he came back for the other 5 3 weeks ago and dug a HUGE hole under.

Ours free ranged in a huge run with dug in wire mesh, but he got in under the extension (which we move about) which is made of security fencing, and is surrounded by planking to stop the digging, but he dug that up too. Grr.
 
I lost my 3 girls this year. Bloody fox jumped 6 foot fence and flipped the nest box lid off in the middle of the night, took all their heads off and left their bodies strewn round the garden. It's sickening that they dont even bother to eat them. I'm so traumatised I just can't get any more yet. :mad:
 
sorry to say this he will be back tomorrow for the rest of them surprised he didnt kill them today. only way to stop the fox is a very good fully fenced and roofed run, and a gun. phone your hunt see if any one wants to come and shoot charlie for you.
