Hi, my mare had a couple of spots of blood down her legs today, and when I investigated found she had been bleeding slightly from her vulva. No sign of trauma or injury, she was happy for me to have a look. Only talking a very small amount of blood.

Any ideas?

Check what she's scratching her arse on in the field. They can get some nasty injuries that way. She might not be but if that's what it is I would fence it off/move it asap and maybe provide a safe scratching point.

She is quite the arse scratcher! Hopefully moving into a leccy fencing paddock next week.

In season ??
Possibly, I can never really tell as her behaviour doesn't change.

Definitely go have a good look for nails or check she's not using a spikey tree or something then.
Spikey tree seems to be the culprit, found pine needles in there tonight. My son chopped down the offending branches bless him (He's only 13)

She may have a ruptured varicose vein.
Oh god that sounds scary, how would I know if that were the case?

My son's old pony tore herself rubbing, made quite a mess. I had the vet out to check no internal injuries.

Can I suggest you also check for pinworm as that maybe a cause of "arse scratching".
