Hiya

Just wondering if this has ever happened to your horse and what caused it and should I be worried.

Lunged pony tonight in a normal lunge cavesson (no bit) tonight. Working him well but not very hard when I noticed blood round his mouth. Stopped immediately and wiped it off but could not see where it had come from. Maybe thinking he could have bit the inside of his mouth or something? He had been eating the blackthorn hedge just before lunging so could he have caught it in his mouth? I had a good look and couldn't find anything though he was not that co-operative but that could have just been him being a bugger rather than hurting somewhere.

No more blood appeared and he wasn't bothered at all by it. Blood was definitely in his mouth rather than down his nose - it had gathered round his lips like saliva and it was bright red.

As I said, whatever was bleeding had stopped and he wasn't bothered by it. I am trying not to be a paranoid mother but we are on our own now instead of on a yard and I don't want to miss anything serious...

Please tell me to stop worrying and chill out

That's what I'm thinking though he has never done it before.

Is it the same as when we do it, i.e accidental, hurts for a minute but nothing to worry about??

He did have a few excited moments in canter

I wonder if he did it then?

Jerry did the same last Monday while I was having my lesson. My instructor thought he may have bitten his tongue as he does tend to flick his tongue around a bit! I was quite disturbed by it as he always froths a bit and the froth was all red! My instructor said it wasn't anything to worry about and offered him a drink of water (he refused)!
I rode him a couple of days later and he was absolutely fine so try not to worry.

Thanks for reply, mine too looked worse because of the saliva, like he was wearing bright red lipstick lol.

I will give him tomorrow off then lunge or ride again Thurs - my pony will do anything to get out of work

Mine bled from the mouth when the vet was trying to deal with a cut above her eye, she had to have two huge sedations which didnt work as well as they should the vet couldnt give her any more as he said it would kill her so he put a twitch on she had blood coming out of her mouth i panicked and he said not to worry as she had just caught her tongue i know its a bit different but the vet wasnt concerned at all so i wouldnt worry too much so maybe just keep an eye on it..
