I am continually amazed by how horses know how/what you are feeling. Bit of a pointless post really but I was really upset last night after some bad news, but held it together at work etc. Got to the yard, all smiles with everyone. Walked to my mares box and she just looked at me in a different way from normal, gently nudged me and licked my hand. She never does this she normally ferrets for treats.. me well i burst into tears arms around her neck and she just stands there letting me sob into her neck, doesnt try and barge to get back to her haynet (she is always starving), doesn't fish for treats, doesn't move! Just lets me sob and sob. Then after a while she sort of turned her head and gave me the gentlest of nudges as if to say 'ok mum stop crying now it will all be fine' but still didn't return to her haynet until I had left her box!!! I rode her and don't get me wrong she wasn't exactly a stressage pony but we didnt really have any arguments, she did what she was told despite a howling gale and then 'looked after me' again when we had finished and I had another little cry, it was like she toned down her personality as if she knew it was a sombre occassion.

Amazed me. She is normally larger than life, pretty bolshy and pretty me me me and food food food and just for one night, as if she knew i needed it, she looked after me and was a different horse.

Horses are ruddy amazing!

They are amazing creatures at times, you must have a fantastic bond with her, hugs as sounds like you need some take care

My old mare used to be the same. Most of my teenage heartbreak (and adult) was cried into her mane. And if i needed that quiet time, she would push her nose against my cheek and just gently breath on me. She passed away last year and i've not yet reached that point with my new boy but your right, they are amazing. My dog is the same.

Chin up, you have a special girl who sounds like she has your back. Big hugs

They are pretty amazing. They must pick up on the vibes.
The day I was moving my horses the herd leader had one mouthful of breakfast then went over to the gate and started pawing and biffing it. He was ready for the off. They were walking over so how did he know?

My boy has done this, especially this summer when I had alot of stress. He would come and stand while I sobbed into his mane, horse therapy should be free on NHS in my opinion xx

Mind you with mine it's a bit of a stretch to reach his neck ;-)

Awww what a lovely story :) mares are very good listeners in their own right !! I dont think my 4 year old gelding would give a twiddle if there was a hay net behind him, ha!

SS x

well someone will come along and spoil it and say it's all body language and they read us like books but i like to let myself believe that they do understand our feelings sometimes:o

oohhh bum i was the one who spoilt it lol;)

My boy is useless, never picks up on anything like that. Unless were out hacking and I need to talk, he will listen the whole way around and just plod along as I talk away. I can really feel he's listening to what I'm saying.

Is it more a mare thing? I don't recall my boys ever being as attentive as my mare, but then she was only like that with me. She didn't care for anyone else where as the boys are pretty much the same with everyone.

What makes it even weirder is my mare is not the cuddly sort, she loves being groomed but even a whisperer who I got out years ago said she hates fuss and hugs and cuddles and would rather be left alone!! Thinking back I can't think of a time when she has let me do what I did last night ever. Bless her not sure what I would do without her at times like these!

That reminds me of the time last year when OH and I split up. Nadia was living out then and I was so upset, I went to the field and Nadia wasn't fussed at all but as I was sitting on the grass the other pony in the field came and just rested his chin on my head, for ages.
When I got up to go he just stood at the fence watching me walk away.

It is funny how they pick up on things, I tacked my mare up ready to ride on Saturday (for the first time in over a week as I broke my finger :o) only for her to stand, full fat 16.3 weight, on my toes. I swiftly untacked her, shoved her back in the field and sat and cried on a little verge. Usually she'd be thrilled at the prospect of an extra hour of filling her face but she just stood and looked at me over the fence. Then when I went back later to put her rug on she actually walked over, as opposed to looking up then continuing to eat, and sniffed me foot :o

Yes animals are pretty amazing and just pick up on our energy/emotions. You and your mare obviously have a strong and trusting relationship, she also knows you need a shoulder to cry on. Hope you're feeling better today. (((hugs)))
