Blimey!! How much?! farriers and shoeing gulp

So I have been out of horses for a little while now, although I run a feed store so I know how much feed has increased by....I am on horse duty for 2 weeks for a friend so she can have a much needed holiday! On one of the days the farrier is due and she has left me the money I was quite staggered to see a set of shoes, just bog standards is now £105!!! I mean I know petrol has gone up and farriers have to make a living but with the cost of raw materials do they even make much profit? Trims are now £35 - last time I bought a set of shoes it was £75 back in I think 2018...We are in the rip off south east so may be cheaper elsewhere. And as much as I'm enjoying pottering around with the horses I won't be owning another!!!!!
 
I am in Kent and paying £85 for a set and £30 for a trim but even around us there is quite a variance. My farrier has warned that he may have to add £5 per visit for increased fuel costs.
 
I pay £120 for a new set, and £105 for a refit. My farrier is absolutely incredible, and the difference he has made to both my horses is staggering.
It’s definitely gone up, but I don’t mind paying for him because he’s so good. ?
 
Try having 4! My farrier only lives round the corner from my yard so I don't pay fuel but I have 2 x trims (& one is a heavy horse premium), 1 in remedial shoes and another shod in front.

He's worked miracles so worth the £££. I used to have a sleepless night before hoof day but now I just grab the likit and we crack on.

Your friend is paying about average for SE
 
:eek: it must be very dependent on region - up here in N Yorks we're paying £75 for a full set with road nails from the good-but-relatively-newly-qualified farrier, or about £85-£90 for the same from a much more experienced one. Clearly this is a bargain!
 
You all still have it so cheap over there/around the UK. It amazes me that prices are still so "low" for certain things such as farriers and hay. Yes, it doesn't help anyone for me to say this, but it's still decently affordable over there it seems.

I'm not doing too bad where I am. It's 55€ for a trim.
 
My farrier put his prices up earlier this year from £65 to £70 for a full set of shoes.
£2 more for road nails. I’m in Devon.
I’m aware he is in the cheaper side though.
He always on time too and does a great job.
 
It’s £40 for a trim on the north isles. But the last time he came he took a rasp around Tali’s and didn’t charge as she’d self trimmed which I thought was very good of him. Horses are expensive but you’ve got to spend your money on something ?
 
Ours has just put his prices up due to the costs he has to cover - full set is now £80 and trim is £30, but adding £5 on if he's only coming for one horse. He said the price of rasps has gone through the roof as well.
 
I pay £45 for fronts and a trim behind. I'm not sure what a full set costs- this is in the SW.

My farrier did say he is considering having to put up his prices, as everything (steel, fuel, gas) has shot up in price, and will again in the winter.
 
Up here it's £100 a full set, £35 a trim. Which is why I won't be bringing another tb home any time soon. Whilst mine have always happily loved unshod in winter and fronts on for competing in summer (my choice not necessity) ror now want a full set of shoes on horses for ridden classes.

I get 2 trims and one trim behind and special navicular shoes in front £ 105

OMG that is a lot. I organised myself a bag of pick and mix outside the trafford centre on Friday. I took it to the guy, who weighed it and said "That will be £29, please."

Me: "What?" :oops:
Him: "£29 (plus grams, kilos, blah, blah, blah)"
Me: "£29? For a Pick and Mix?"
Him: "Yes, £29."
Me: "Really? Definitely? £29?"
Him: "Yes, £29."
Me: "Right, you'd better keep it then."

I walked off feeling a bit twilight-zoney.

Wow. What justification do they have for that? Sounds very unreasonable.

So your point is - it is better to feed your horse pick and mix than have a trim???
 
I am in Devon and it is £55.00 per pony for front shoes and a trim. I go eight weeks at a time, their feet are very good, farrier excellent young chap. Now I am so old I remember paying 10/- for front shoes for my pony.
Regarding the full sets of shoes on RORs and Hunters I suppose i can see the risk factor but it would be a bit silly if it spread to M & M s for instance!
 
I really think that £100 for a full set is quite reasonable. I mean, do you expect your farrier to make no money to cover his time, skills, and resources (shoes, nails, fuel, forge, etc.)?
