Blimey, new horse!! Feeding?

Haven't posted here much but yesterday my mother in law and I bought a horse to share, a lovely 10 year old welsh cob mare. She's been living out all winter with no work and just hay and is in really good, if slight overweight condition. I'm pretty sure she's not going to need anything else at her new yard which has lovely grazing but my mother in law is adamant that she has two feeds a day

and I don't want to fall out with her just yet so can anyone suggest something that I can feed as a token? I've been out of the feed world for a while and have seen Alfa Oil, I was thinking that this with some veggies would be a nice feed for her and then M-i-L can give her all the garlic and herbs and supplements that she likes to feed.

You would be better with HI FI Lite instead of Alfa A or Alfa oil. They use cheap oil to add to its so a waste of money, your better to add your own oil if you want to add oil.

If horse is overweight then you would be better to feed a handful of HiFi Lite instead of the Alfa A Oil, as Alfa A Oil is higher in calories than HiFi Lite.

Hi-fi lite plus a broad spectrum vit & min supplement. If M-I-L wants to feed anything else, a handful of hi fibre cubes would also be fine. Definitely no alfalfa and no oil. Welsh Cobs are designed to live on sparse grazing, so she will be a naturally good doer. Hope you have lots of fun with her.

I give my Welsh Cob Hi Fi Lite...couple of handfuls, Feedmark's all round supplement (brilliant stuff) and some carrots once a day. He has all year round shine to his coat and is obviously getting everything he needs from that and grass/hay.

alfa A oil is for ponies who need to put on weight or have trouble keeping their weight on. Ive got a 15.2 welsh cob coming sunday who is currently not being worked and is being fed once daily on molichaff, sugarbeet and cheap mix.

Try looking at simple systems - they do ruff stuff (chopped up mature grass) and lucy stalks. Both will give MIL the idea that she is being kind and feeding horsie but will give very little feed value, they have no mollasses, oil or cereals added. TBH if the mare is a little overweight now and she is going onto good grazing you need to be really carefull. Simple systems also do a nice feed balancer called total eclipes based on seaweed, brewers yeast and linseed.
