Blind panic/breaking off when tied up?

Hi,
My horse used to do this - do you give him a haynet when he is tied up - try holding him( without tying him up for his feed etc and make sure he has a haynet or feed so he has something to concentrate on and relate being tied up to something nice. It takes time but it works. In fact my horse used to be so bad i would stand with the rope in one hand and a feed int he other for the farrier:eek: Be patient they do learn :)

It is tiresome, isn't it? I had a TB that would do the same. Not regularly, thankfully, he was more than capable of standing calmly tied up but on occasion he would take exception and pull back until he had snapped something - he had no inclination to run off, just occasionally panicked when he felt the pressure.

I now have a Clydie X who will do the same thing but he panics and scares himself so much that he will run off given half the chance so I'm afraid I do everything in his stable so he doesn't HAVE to be tied up. I know you don't have this option but some of the ideas above sound very good - I'm sure you can try some of them to see what works best for your boy.
