I realise that you may be few and far between on here, but I have a question.

Anyone have any experience with silver fittings that are sterling silver plated?

Do they hold up well and keep a nice sparkle, or are they something to avoid altogether

Well as you know, I am not into bling. All of my saddles are plain, I even dislike tooling
shocked.gif
, however I do have a show halter with silver on it. The only time I use it is for photos of my selling horses in the conformation picture. The silver has remained shiny but probably because of the lack of times it comes out.....and it really doesn't have to do a whole lot.

I know a number of people who do like bling on their saddles - you have to clean them with silver cleaner, same as with silver cutlery, otherwise the shine fades as it gets dirty. Once cleaned they do always appear to come up shining.

Personally, if I was you, I'd steer clear of silver plating and go for solid silver as it is likely to be far more robust and won't tarnish no matter how many times you clean it.

Thank you Tia. How did I guess that you would be my response!? lol

Say....my round pen arrives this morning!

Still trying to figure out how I am going to manage to get a thousand lb pallet off of the truck by myself
grin.gif
Merrill was supposed to be here to help as they advised us that the driver is under no obligation to. Well...Merrill is not going to be here so I suppose if that driver does not want to help me I will have to disassemble it panel by panel! lol

We shall see how fast he jumps from the truck when he (or she) realises it will take me three hours!
grin.gif

Two words......"dress appropriately". Then the driver won't be able to stop himself helping you!!
grin.gif

How exciting - mind you it takes hours to put them up if you have bought the heavy duty one. The lightweight ones are easier I believe, but mine took me all day and I had to use the tractor to move all the heavy panels around.

But what if it's a woman?...her raging jealousy will force her to stay in the cab laughing at me sweating while she sips a McDonalds Vanilla flavored ice coffee

wink.gif
lol

They are light duty panels. All I really needed with my "wild mustangs" and all
smirk.gif

Ah then you have a smelly old shawl and a walking stick to hand; smear some mud on your hands to make them look old and walk around like some old cripple.....
grin.gif

What length are the panels?

It isn't easy....who told you that!
shocked.gif
They lied! When you have however many panels all locked together and then you find that the last one doesn't have enough space, or even worse has too much space......then you have to move the whole thing. It's fun

.

NO! I mean it would be easy to take it off the truck one by one. I can wait for help to put it up later. lol

I have put them up before so I know what to expect for that.

I am trying to get my aunt over here atm to help me...I am conning her with wine

I think if I am left to do it with Merrill it will be an obtuse triangle pen

With Peggy's help it will be perfect...hers are set up nice ...lol

good thing I have 4 bottles of wine here

It is like the carrot over the cart donkeys head with her

Jade, what is the diameter of your round pen, easy way to put it up is bash in a stake in the middle measure out with a string from the stake the diameter walking round with a spray can, then you put the sections as near to the line as possible and hey presto it goes together a lot easier. We have a heavy duty one and as Tia says it's a heavy nightmare to go up if you get the sides slightly out.

That is a great idea!

I have it up for now. Aunt came to help me.

I only used 11 of the panels for now though in the temporary area I am keeping it in.

I have four more panles and will have the full pen together when I move it across the road at a later date.

I will use the method you describe then as my aunt and I had a heck of a time even getting the smaller one round

Round pens? Easy??? HA HA HA . . . oh, sorry.
smile.gif

As to the silver, what are you going to be using the saddle for? If it's for home/small shows I'd go without/minimal bling, personally. The plate looks crappy pretty quickly if it's used much and even the silver takes some looking after to stay nice. Lots of the high falutin' QH people I know have two identical saddles, one without much on it for "home" and another for in the ring that never gets ridden in otherwise.

Yes, really.

hey, got a show saddle and the silver seems to stay ok on it...the bridle not so good ..not too sure why...prob cause my mucky paws are clambering all over it...
Round pen...wicked :0) have fun....xx

I would like it for light use and will only really be used in parades ( Chester is going to go in one this coming spring
smile.gif
), possibly showing next year (my goal for Chester)

Just to "have it " really
I would mainly ride in my well broken in saddles for anything else.

I would just like one flashy set and do not want to pay $5,000 for it tbh

Most of the people I know that have really expensive show sets with silver on them only ride them in the show ring!

lol

You should do some work in your show set though ...not only to break it in a bit but so that the horse has a good feel for the tack

Very nice sets can last a lifetime

My grandfather bought a nice show set with alot of silver on it about 30 years ago and I imagine it is worth more than the $2,000 he paid for it back then now. Still beautiful, my aunt has it now and even though she has not been taking the best care of it , it is still wonderful

In fact, the bridle to the set is pictured on the bay with me riding at age 5 in my sig...shows how old the saddle set is

Alot of people are talking about silver care but I am still really wondering about "sterling silver plated" Is that just another way to word "CRAP"?
tongue.gif

ok......I am posting the pic of it.

I didn't want to as I assume most of you will think it's terribly tacky and we Americans have a bad enough rep
tongue.gif

I realise it will not be everyones taste, but the main thing I am wanting to know about is the quality of the silver. I can get the saddle for a rock bottom price and even if I don't like it when I get it here I know I can double my money selling it local

so...the silver says "sterling silver plated" and here is the pic of it

what do you think it will look like in a year?
tongue.gif

I swear that even some of the very expensive Tex Tan saddles with silver have plated trim, but I may be wrong

If it gets awful it is removeable. You can always have it fitted with new trim

Okay Jade, well first off - from the photo this looks like a Mexican made saddle judging by the stitching.....you definitely don't want one of those; so make sure you know the manufacturer of this saddle otherwise you might be dumped with it forever.

ok...All I know about it is that it was made by Eagle Saddlery and I have never heard of them.

that being said....

you should SEE what I have bought for cheap online and sold doubling my money.

I like the look of this one though and thought I might keep it
blush.gif

Sort of unique in a tacky way

*whispers* it's only $200

I am positive if it gets here and looks really cheap and I don't want it, someone will at least give me $300 for it....... My bet is even more. This area is full of em
tongue.gif
(me being one
tongue.gif
)

well that word did cross my mind
tongue.gif

I am from a larger city so I am just a pink neck

I think merrill is fitting in with the locals here faster than I am. He has even begun hunting and wearing mossy oak sweat pants. He bought a hat at tractor supply that said "Built Ford Tough" and has even been spotted turning country music on
blush.gif

What would they think of him back in Scotland now!
tongue.gif

I was told that "John Deere" apparel was becoming trendy over there...they may be well on their way!
