Blinkers for riding in?

Hi all

Speaking to a friend of a friend this weekend and she said she rides her horse in blinkers as he is scared f new surroundings etc. She said you can tape specific parts of the blinkers, ie if a horse rears you can tape the top part of the blinkers so they cant see that area, in the fact that a horse wont rear if it cant see the area......anyway, my question is first of all what are the real name for these 'blinkers' I thought she said it began with P and she said they are like mesh type over the eyes. Secondly has anyone ever ridden in them and what did you think of them?

Only time I've ever used blinkers was for driving and they are pretty common for that. You can buy wool sleeves for the cheekpieces, they are called french blinkers.

I've seen people showjumping with them.
The other style I've seen which are on a hood are for racing.

I've heard of using them to help prevent rearing. In fact I'm sure the recent Horse magazine mentions this somewhere. I thought for driving that they were brilliant, especially in busy cities where there's traffic whizzing everywhere. None of them objected to wearing them and a couple were noticeably calmer with them on.

I would of course introduce very gradually and would lunge or better long rein first in a safe area.

they are called a pacifier and they are like the racing hood from the post above but with what look like teas strainers over the eyes. they are originaly for horses racing on dirt tracks to stop it going in there eyes but monty roberts did a demonstration of tapeing off the top part so the horse couldnt see up and therefor didnt want to rear
