My two and a half year old gelding currently looks like a heavily pregnant mare! He has moved onto new grass but has never ballooned up like this before when on good grazing.
He had a worm egg count done about 4 or 5 weeks ago which came back clear and i was advised i didn't need to worm him. I was pretty skeptical though as everytime he has been wormed i have seen eggs/red worm come out in his dung - so because of that i wormed him anyway.
The only thing i can think of is that he recently had his first adult tooth through (upper central) and the other upper central baby tooth has come out leaving a big gap with the adult tooth just poking through.
He seems to be eating fine, not quidding but maybe his mouth isn't comfortable and he's not chewing properly and its bloating him? As horses chew with their molars i wouldn't have though a central missing would effect his eating? He is very 'teethy' and chews his leadrope at every given possibilty though!
He is fed a small handful of Hi-Fi light and a bit of youngstock mix. He has access to a mineral lick and pretty good grazing. He doesn't have a particularly fat neck or crest and has a slightly 'apple' bottom but he has always had this, im told its the cob in him
Anyway ideas appreciated! He is booked into have his teeth done next month.
