Hi Every One,

My Mare has a blocked sinus in one nostril, I would have thought that this would affect how she feels ie not her normal self, like we feel when we have a cold.

She was so on her toes this morning going out to the field and cantered of covering me in mud. Her membrain is pink but she is still snotty in the mornings.

What do you guys think?

You need to know why the sinus is blocking.

From the age of 2 my horse had sinusitis on and off 2-3 times a year. Each time he was given a course of AB's and it would clear up. Gradually it become more often until the AB's had no effect. At this point the Vet thought there must be something else going on and referred him.

When they put the scope up his nose, they couldnt see anything as there was so much snot. Xrays showed he had 2 root abcesses.

He ended up having surgery to remove 2 upper teeth, and because the infection has been there so long, he had to have his sinus knocked thru, so he now has one big cavity.
It took another 3 months to fully clear up all the infection, and and would say another year for him to get over it.
As a 4yrs old (when he had the surgery) he looked like a 2yr, and it had stunted his growth.

He did catch up, and was eventually broken at 6yrs old.

I know that sounds like a really bad outcome, but unless they find the source of the problem you could be in for a very expensive time!

Ask you Vet to check, and get her scoped sooner rather than later.

I had this too from a cracked tooth in daughter pony. It was gross and smelt like rotting flesh. He was quite poorly and the medicine he took cost £200 for a bottle. It worked though and we have never had any problems since. Get her scoped. Without this they wont know the cause as it can be lots of reasons

One of the horses that I work with had a chronic sinus infection, which recurred after antibiotics and even after flushing. A course of echinacea actually got the problem under control.

It is a relatively inexpensive thing to try, and can't do any harm, alongside any other treatments from your vet.

As others have said - you really need to find the cause of the blockage if it doesn't clear up or reoccurs. From experience expensive and painful damage can be caused when they are left too long.
