Just as important as other people reading it, is you reading it back years later, and reflecting on your progress and reminiscing of times gone by.

Do it :)

Go for it! We moved out to Bulgaria three months ago and I started one then. It's amazing, looking back, what little things we had forgotten about, and lots of people read it! Loads of pictures keep people interested, and I know there will be people out there wanting to do what you are about to and will want to know the good and the bad. I wish I had thought about it when we took our lad on as you forget how bad things once were.

Have a look at this, it's a way of linking your blog to lots of other equine blogs.
I have been their blog of the day a couple of times and it brings in readers you might not usually come across.

http://www.hay-net.co.uk/

You can also link your own blog to your own Facebook and Twitter accounts and once it is more established try and get it picked up by Stumbledupon and ( if you use wordpress ) wordpress reader.

If you find other blogs working in the same area as your own, Like them and Follow them to increase traffic.

My little experimental writing blog has now been running for about 16 months and has had over 8,000 visitors and that's a more specialist field than equine ones, so you may be pleasantly surprised.

Good luck with it.
