Can you recommend a good wind-proof, warm and snuggly jacket?

My idiot husband doesn't know how to dress for 'the weather' so I am determined to give him the right tools to do so...and then he won't come grousing to me when he has a cold or the man-flu as a result of running around outside not wearing enough clothes! :mad:

oh wears his tweed coat for yard work, then layers and a soft shell for riding. Neither of them are riding jackets as there is just about no choice!!
 
Don't think husband can get away with tweed - he is not horsey, he is more of a rowing and sailing type...

WHO SHOULD REALLY HAVE MORE OF A CLUE ABOUT DRESSING FOR COLD WEATHER CONDITIONS!!
 
If he's not a fashion victim, then send him to your local army surplus store. MY OH has a wonderful Russian army parka which he swears is brilliant in the cold. And the Russians should have a pretty good idea about dressing for cold weather!

If he's just trying to stay warm then a good quality windstop fleece is great, I have a couple and the best is a Loop, designed for fishing / hunting. Add a Horseware, SSI / Shires or Mountain Horse type jacket over the top when it's really chilly. I also have a cord type Toggi puffa jacket and when it's wet and nasty I have couple of Driza-Bone type long wax coats with fleece / wool liners that I alternate between, you don't need to work too hard in those before you are steaming.

I find lots of layers are the key, wicking top, followed by T shirt, followed by riding top, then a gillet if required and then a jacket. I will add that I do also wear jeans or moleskins for fieldwork and breeches for riding. Thought I'd better add that before the smut starts again :D
 
Now that I have managed to stop laughing .....:D ...... another vote for Musto, bit expensive, but very warm, last forever, machine washable and Musto started out for sailing, so appropriate for your OH.
 
Ignore all the smut OP, a whingeing bloke, or worse, a bloke with Man Flu is a very serious issue. :D
It's all about the layers. Have made my OH invest in loads of layers that he can wear when he is riding or watching our baby horse being lunged.
Start with a wicking fleece as a base layer - Craghoppers do good blokey ones that don't look too tweedy.
Then another fleece or sweater.
Then maybe a waistcoat - not glamorous but the Thermatex ones are very warm.
Then a decent jacket - OH wears a Carhartt one from the USA that is heavy canvas with a fleece lining, but a Musto would be a good substitute.
Fleece neckwarmers and a selection of woolly hats are always useful too, and don't forget some gloves for him.
Go on, spoil him a bit!
