Does anyone know of 'Blood Banks', has anyone on this forum ever sent their horse to the blood bank? can someone tell me what the set up is, what the criteria is for sending a horse there and what quality of life the horse has? Also if a horse would require medication are they okay about this? and........

if they didn't get on well there do they have them pts?

I've tried googling but not much success.

I think they only take healthy horses not on medication. I was told they lived in a herd and were brought in to have blood taken once or twice a month. They were not shod and live outdoors.
A girl on my old yard sent a horse there. I am not sure but I think they only keep them until a certain age and then ??send them back??
I think it can be an option for a youngish retired horse but I don't think they take oldies or sickies.
Not much help sorry.

There is one near Edinburgh. I have tried googling it but can't find it either, I have definately been on the site though as was looking into it for my horse. If I remember correctly they are all kept in a herd and have big barns to go into at night - it's all very 'natural' for them. I think it also said that they were pts at 15 which is why I didn't take it any further as my boy is 14. This is only from memory and the pts part may have been from an 'expert' source (you know the kind I mean

One of our hacks is past a Blood bank horse farm. All the horses look in really good condition and they seem to be kept out on really good grazing for the summer. They are in a huge barn at the moment with it being winter, but judging from their good condition, I would imagine that its in the YO best interest to keep them in good nick because their blood would be rejected if it wasnt up to standard. I think I would certainly entertain sending a horse there from the little I have seen

I sent a mare to the blood bank in Edinburgh about 10 years ago. I would recommend sending your horse to either this blood bank or the one in bucks if you are in the situation of having a horse pts that could still lead a useful life with quality - albeit not ridden. Both places can have waiting lists, however my mare had a place within a month. Unfortunately she didn't handle the bleeding procedure and they tried to get her to accept it for a while. In the end they rang me and offered her back to me but I decided in her case pts was best. The staff were very kind and everything was handled sensitively.
