Blood clots again .....

Has anyone at all have a horse that has had a blood clot in the hind leg ? .

If so ...How long did it take to disperse ?

Using arnica on the affected area and massaging into the leg, using a more powerful hose to spray the leg and just blasting the leg with water and then cold hosing and short walks inhand .

Results still not in from last week were they drew fluid from the fetlock to check for infection .

Is there anything else I can possibly do for her ?

Shes also on bute twice a day .

Vet is going to scan her again in 2 weeks time to see how its going . Hoping it to be gone by then but its just not showing any signs of getting smaller

Are you giving her arnica tablets as well as rubbing in the cream/gel??

Get them from Boots/health food shop etc If you can get the 30c tablets. I give them at least 4 tablets at a time (push them into an apple/carrot). They are perfectly ok to take with bute etc but will help disperse the clot and any any soft tissue bruising etc. Is much more effective than the gel/cream on its own.

I always use the tablets in preference to the gel/cream as they are more effective.

Sorry, read post but was confused ! Do you mean a Haematoma ? This is a sort of, blood filled bruise, the blood will clot and the appearance of the swelling will alter as the clot and serum within the cavity re-organise themselves, before the lump disperses. If you've ever been kicked by a horse you'll know what I mean. Dx

Would make more sense it being a haematoma due to the swelling .

Vet described it as a blood clot .

Luckily I haven't been kicked by a horse .

blood clot = cirulatory (sp) problems, so i would feed a supplement such as MSM, or maybe devils claw

lack of results is generally a good sign - if there's lots of infection it takes little time to culture what they get, if there is very little/none they wait a while to be sure...

Hopefully wishful that is the case .

Amanda Nope vet has just advised box rest with 10 minute inhand walk and bute along with arnica .

Everyone keeps asking me this but vet is hopeful that it will go away on its own accord , Time hopefully is a healer in this case .

Just another wee update for anyone that is interested ....

Had a word with vet with regards to the swelling possibly moving up the leg a little .

So vet is coming out tomorrow to have a wee looksy .

Hi I'm wondering if you can help me 😓 I've found your post and I have the same problem!! I'm hoping you are able to shed some light on the treatment of the blood clot for your horse. My 4 year old mare has a blood clot on the inside of her upper hind leg. We suspect she was bitten or stung by an insect originally which caused inflammation and infection - treated with antibiotics, painkillers and steroids. Pain - swelling and lameness came back after initial treatment, took bloods, X-Ray's and scanned the area. X-rays fine, bloods slightly low indicating infection and scan showed the blood still moving but sludging through part of the vein (forming a clot) she went onto a higher dose of antibiotics, steroids and started her on asprin to try and thin the blood. This treatment went on for just over 3 weeks and she seemed to be recovering great so we started to gradually reduce the steroids and asprin (completely finished antibiotics). Once I got her to the stage of half dose of steroids and no asprin the swelling and lameness came back so the vet re-scanned the vein and it has clotted 😓 we have put her back up onto a high dose of steroids again (95 per day) and back on the asprin (1200mg per day) as well as applying Compagel directly onto the area twice a day (contains heparin and is absorbed through the skin) my vet has told me this almost never happens and is waiting to see what treatment is available for horses (medicine wise) as if she was human she would be givin heparin and warfarin but would be kept in hospital at first and if she was to bump herself she could bleed internally due to stopping the body from clotting. Not easy telling a 4 year old horse to take it easy and try not to bump herself! 😳 one specialist vet has come back with the suggestion of surgery under general anesthetic to strip the vein but I don't really want to put her through surgery unnecessarily if there is another option.
What was the treatment and outcome for your horse?

am very interested in this thread. my horse as a hard lump on his leg beneath a cut/scratch. has had anti biotics and the lump is still there its no warmer than the rest of the leg and vet said to leave alone. horse is turned out daily and I think its slowly reducing in size. has had it several weeks now. might try arnica as suggested, thanks OP. Do keep us updated.
