I had a text yesterday from my YO who was looking after Ed to tell me he has gotten himself in (again) and upon checking him she had fround fresh blood dripped on the stable floor. She and another trusted livery checked him over - couldn't find anything

I have also checked him and found nothing. Any thoughts anyone?

Did you check his willy? (Seriously - my lad sometimes gets blood on his legs in summer, it's where flies have bitten his bits! That's what made me think of it...)

Could it have been a minor nosebleed, or something along those lines? I think one of our old mares had one once a day or so after she bashed her nose in the stable- no sign of any other injury, and I think they quite easily wipe blood off their noses onto hay/into water etc.

Do you know I did think about his mickey, but he doesn't get it out if he can help it so couldn't look!!

I did think nosebleed, could have burst a blood vessel with the exertion of jumping out...again...idiot horse.

could he have scraped his belly?

He could have just given himself a nick under the chin, for some reason any wound under the chin has to bleed lots

Nosebleed I reckon, can remeber jumpin my horse once and came out with some specks off blood on front legs, spent ages lookin for a cut thinkin had smacked herself wit front legs then realised was a bit off blood on nose, and it was a minor nose bleed, showed up on legs tho as got white legs, was fine after that tho!!

Was going to suggest a nosebleed too, but they dont really tend to just have a few drops tbh. Maybe cut his mouth/tongue? Ive seen quite a few horses bleeding from the mouth recently - easily done and usually causes no problems.

I once went in for lunch, leaving a horse in his stable, as normal.
Came back out about 45mins later - blood everywhere, all over the walls, the floor, his front.
He had bitten his own tongue (he was CB x Tb, and therefore a bit special).

No blood on his mouth, nose etc and everything checked - I seriously cannot see what the silly twirp has done. He's in my bad books at the moment.

There were many drips of blood, in a few places, fresh bright red blood, unsullied by mud, goo, spittle etc.

Very odd. The last suggestion was cats had killed something, however have never seen them in the rafters (thank goodness I'd have a heart attack!) Nothing untoward in the rafters either, unless the swallows have taken to murdering slightly larger prey than insects.

did he have access to any hay ??
i had something similar happen turned out he'd spiked the inside of his nostril on a sharp bit of hay
- cue torch in horses nostril -it was very hard to find the site.

Will look at his ears thanks

It could well be a mouth/muzzle/nose wound that he's wiped clean. I am hoping tha fact he's hale and hearty today and we havent found the wound means it wont be too bad.

Just another thought to add to the rest - my friends mare jumped /pulled down the electric fencing in her field ( in the dark of course, just to make it a lot harder to fix!!) and when my friend got her mare in she was walking stiffly. Friend thought she had twanged something, checked her all over found no cuts and decided she had pulled something.
Just as she was leaving she noticed a drop of blood on the shavings - just one drop! So she checked her all over again and eventually found a puncture wound right up inbetween her back leg and her body, basically where the leg joins ( dont know the technical term).
Vet was called and it seems the metal end had 'impaled' her - a deep wound with no blood to speak of.

So not trying to scare you, just try to check right underneath him.xx
