i've been told that each breed of horse have their own unique DNA and that to be sure of the breeding i can get a blood test done to find out if my pony is a purebred or part bred and also what he would be crossed with if part bred.

i don't know if this is true but wondered if anyone on here can let me know either way.

thanks

Not true!! You can get dna tests to confirm parentage if the parents have their dna held on file by a register/breed society or are alive today and dna can be obtained from them. So if you had a unregistered horse who you'd been told was by x out of y and both of these are registered horses with a society, you can have a dna test to compare your horses dna to theirs. This can result in the registration of your horse if it is proved to be by and out of the registered parents. If you follow!!!! lol!

thankyou, i thought it sounded too easy to find out. unfortunately i haven't been told anything about his parentage, just that he was rounded up BUT alot of people who have seen him in the flesh have all commented on him looking pure bred and that he must have some good pedigree in him.

oh well back to the drawing board again! lol

You could still get him tested because if you are correct and he is a pedigree, then hopefully his family will be on record.
Do the test and hopefully they will be able to match it.

I assume!

When we wanted to check our mare's breeding we were asked by the KWPN to supply hair samples with follicles attached - I think it may depend on who you want to check with.
