Bloods back - horse tied up. Any advice on managing him now?

Mine tied up once mid-ride I got off and led her home she was shaking and I thought she was having a fit was horrible! Vet said there was a small bit of damage I very slowly brought her back into work- started with walking in hand etc. She hasn't had it since touch wood and never had it before. I feed her electrolytes when sweaty and try to warm up and down properly. Ride as regularly as I can. I try to take her for a good walk out before I do any faster stuff. (Not easy as she likes to trot everywhere!)

Vet just rang with blood test results and said that clearly my horse had tied up - he was feeling very flat and puffing hard which is what prompted me to get the vet out thinking he had a low grade virus. He didn't show any of the major signs of tying up at all - he was literally just flat to ride. I certainly didn't pick up on the attack at the time so am hoping that it was a minor attack.

Horse is out in the field until Monday then I am to start riding again quietly and we will retest the bloods on Thursday night and see how he is doing.

I know he needs salt, Vitamin E & Selenium in his diet. He is only on pony nuts, unmolassed chaff (Dengie hifi) and micronised linseed with pro hoof and a hack up joint supplement plus steamed hay. He is hunting fit and goes out in the field every day, normally all day every day but due to the cold weather is only going out at lunchtime till about 6.30 p.m at the moment.

ERS Pellets have been suggested as has Saracen Relieve by the vet.

I would be grateful for any advice on how to manage this so we avoid another attack and so I can get him properly back on the road to hunting again!!

I havent had time to read all the posts but WHOOOA!!

Mine tied up about 10 days ago, was put on box rest following emergency treatment. We are on day 12 today and he has moved back to old yard with sedalin to travel and still on box rest. He cannot go out until the weather warms up.

2nd bloods show CK levels down but AST still up and advised no riding until further blood test in 10 days.

I seriously would not be thinking of riding your horse any time within the next few weeks, this seems to go against all advice I was given by my vets as the muscles need time to recover and heal.

Hope your horse is ok and mending but would get a second opinion on the exercise?

I've just rung my other vet for a chat who says to do what the first vet has suggested which is to keep him moving quietly and keep him warm as well as walking him out next week and having bloods redone.

I will do as suggested at having his hair tested to be on the safe side.
