Good grief, why on earth was someone who admitted that they new little about the ponies in charge of moving them in thr first plave. Surely they have people experienced with horses working for them?

I talked about this yesterdaywith a lady who breeds Exmoors I know, and the ponies concerned are owned by the Park Authority, so as such they can do what they like to move them.

They never had any problem when they moved them with riders, but obviously the idiots on motorbikes and quads weren't experienced enough to do the job safely.
They use horses for the proper drifts in September, but someone somewhere wants telling to use their common sense next time..

you see, Sue..this makes me REALLY cross...

in the New Forest, ponies are still used as there it is seen as the best way to "drift" the ponies...both ecologically and envirionmentally....isn't the "Moor" treated as such????

That article doesn't really tell the whole story.

The ponies were grazing on Haddon and had escaped. They had to be moved from the field they were in, down a lane and into a corral and transported back on the Hill.

Unfortunately one of the mares became separated and charged off hitting the fence. Due to her injuries and the fact that she is a wild pony, she was despatched quickly.

This herd is owned by the National Park and it is usual to herd the ponies when necessary by quad bike - usually totally successfully.

This was very unfortunate and some holiday makers saw it happen. The person that reported the incident did not live on Exmoor and is not accustomed to the management of wild ponies.

Each year the ponies are brought in off the moor around October to brand and sell the foals. The ponies are checked over then selected to put back on the moor.

It is usual to round them up with horses but quad bikes are used too.

Yep - the ponies are not normally rounded up until October.

As I say a small group of ponies had escaped from the hill onto private land and had to be moved.
