I was told on the phone by a man on the phone at NFU a few weeks back, that my insurance wouldn't expire till the "31st" of this month, and to cancel my Direct Debit at my end to be sure it cancelled payment, so I did, I allready had my online KBIS quote saved ready to pay nearer the end of the month, I have it in my diary to remind me, well it's only the 27th today, I get a letter "this lunchtime" from NFU telling me they have cancelled my policies from the "24th" of august WTF :mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad: FFS, it's bank holiday saturday so I can't phone and sort it out, I have immediately gone online and done the KBIS insurance, but it wont let me do a direct debit setup :mad::mad:, so I have had to pay it in one lump on my card whether I wanted to or not:mad::mad: to make sure I have "some" insurance cover for riding over the bank holiday, not bloody happy, BLOODY LETTER COMES "3DAYS" LATER to tell me they have cancelled :mad::mad:

Also, be careful, as new policy usually has an inception period of 14 days where you are not covered except for accidents.

I too am fuming with nfu, we had our car insured with them. Policy was going to double in price we were told. Sod that! So we looked elsewhere and informed them we would not be renewing, we were told that's fine policy will run out on the 2nd of sept. Receive a letter yesterday to say insurance was cancelled on the 22nd! So my OH was driving without insurance! When he called them they were very unhelpful and told him he would have to pay a full year upfront to get it put back on! Luckily he had already set up new policy.

Total and utter enshrine of tools!

That is totally out of order as well :mad:

The thing is, I have paid up until the end of the month, a rather inflated payment at that, I don't see how they can cancel it before the 31st :mad:

my car insurance this year kindly re insured me even though i had not renewed the policy with them or any one as i have not car, we have shrunk to one. they sent the letter 2 wks after the renewal date and had taken the money out of my account 1 week before then. then they refused to canceal the policy, so a couple of calls later everything was blocked from the card and the card company had asked for a refund.

i know mistaks happan but i can't seem to find any which happens in my favour!

Have a look at your certificate of insurance and if the end date doesn't match what they've told you ring them back and play merry hell. Sounds like a ploy to 'force' people to renew with them to be honest

Leaving NFU due to their premium being absolutely ridiculous!

Got a far better policy and better cover for a half the price with Petplan!

Sorry NFU you are taking the mick with the 'price hike' and you cannot justify that the service is great because you handed over claims to equine first or what ever they are called and they were more useless than a chocolate fireguard!

Oh and you still haven't paid off my vets!!!! £500+ outstanding!

After 21 years of loyalty! No more!

Yup, they've turned from a very good company into something less than good.

Had they not been such irriates, we would have insured with them:

two horses;
two ponies;
two cars;
one trailer.

So, their idiocy has cost them.

I'm not with NFU - I'm with Petplan who are excellent. But a friend of mine was with NFU and sadly lost her foal in an operation a few months ago. They have only just decided they are going to pay up. She's had an awful time, not only because of losing the foal but also wondering if they were going to pay out.

I had my renewal yesterday from NFU it had gone up 50% I couldn't believe it, I have never claimed at all! My problem is that my 2 are now considered veterans so not sure what to do. But a hike of 50% is ridiculous, maybe they don't want to be in insurance any more?

Glad i am reading this, i am insured with nfu, my horse broke his jaw in jan and they were great and paid out more than 2k very promptly but i am worrie my renewal is going to be huge, who do you guys recomend instead? x

Before everyone goes mad slating NFU, I sold my old horse two months ago so cancelled the policy as it was at renewal too (and mega overpriced so would have changed anyway). Anyway so got new horse and shopped about, was sure that I could find better. KBIS was the cheapest of the reliable firms so phoned NFU for a quote out of interest, now currently neddie virtually the same spec insurance wish as the old one. NFU was cheaper than KBIS plus they even reinstated my loyalty bonus thingy as they were keen to have me back. Anyway if they hike the fees next year I shall move proves it is prudent to shop about. And while NFU is having a bad time at the moment, they can be reasonable when pushed.

I have checked our policy paperwork and it would be a year on the second, policy was paid monthly so should have been covered right up to the day. It looks like they cancelled it the day we rang up :-(

I specifically asked the guy on the phone about what dates and when as I didn't want to be uninsured, and I wrote it all down as he told me, I shouldn't need my new insurance to start till the 1st of Sept, and to receive a letter 3 days "after" they have cut me off 7 days early is unbeleivable :mad:

Got my temporary certificate from KBIS by email and printed it out, I will feel happier after the 14 days are gone though.

I cannot comment on Car Insurance with NFU but I had 2 horses insured with them. One has just come up for renewal & as with many people I haven't claimed from them for literally years. The premium had gone up by around 34%, this takes into account the 'loyalty bonus'.

I have cancelled the renewal, had confirmation of cancellation & they have cancelled on the correct date. I have arranged new cover with KBIS. I hope they will give the kind of service that NFU used to give. When my other horse is due for renewal I will also go with KBIS, their quote was considerably cheaper & I believe they will give good service.

On speaking with brokers on the phone several believe that NFU is trying to drop out of Equine Insurance that is why they have bumped up their prices by so much. Apparantly equine insurance was a 'loss leader' for them & they make their money out of Buildings & Farm cover mainly but now they want to drop it as iy's costing them....... this is only a rumour though ;)

I don't think we should have to "push"
I had a business quote, from NFU, it was totally not for my business size,, and was about five times more than I paid Smply Business, also massive excess.

Plus side...I have been with KBIS for years and they are bloody fantastic :) x

In defence of NFU, I have just had to have major investigations done on my mare and they have paid up my claim of nearly £2.5k within a week with no problem. My renewal premium with them for her was more but they reduced the premium on my oldie drastically now she is a veteran, so my actual increase with them this year is not much at all. I'll be staying with them for the moment. They have been excellent over the yars.

Pedantic I would, given your name, have expected you to be sufficiently pedantic to have fished out your old certificate of insurance and checked the actual date of expiry.

I have nothing nice to say about equine insurance companies. My friend had terrible problems with NFU over payment for COPD and I had similar with Pet Plan. No insurance now, just savings MY money and have PL with the British Horses Society.

I had a horse insured with the NFU die of EGS. The woman on the phone in the offoce assured me it was ok for the horse to travel to the hospital for biopsy and potential operation as at this stage we didnt know it was EGS. the NFU then refused to pay out as we had had a different horse colic seveal moths before which we eventually took to the kennels. they said it could have been EGS so we wernt insured for that anymore,different horse or not.

as someone else has already said they have morphed from a blooming fantastic company who felt like couldnt do enough for their customers into another bog standard couldnt give a monkeys insurance company. I am still chasing payment for a claim I had at the beginning of the year and am just about to start a complaints procedure through the financial services people as its getting to the point that I need this settled. They were never the cheapest but previouslyu I had always felt safe that they would do the best by me and my horses - now not so sure. My policy is up for renewal in the next few weeks and I sadly will be shopping around for someone different.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but I heard on good authority that NFU are going down the tubes. Nightmare as I have car and horses insured with them. Hopefully someone will buy them out.

I wont insure with NFU after attempting to get a quote from them for a horsebox that I am having built. We firstly gave an approximate date within 30 days and they wouldnt quote because it was approximate! we then said fine THIS day definetely as even if we didnt have receipt of horsebox by then (we have ownership papers already) we will insure it at the builders..the woman on the phone firstly accused my dad of lying about the day we wanted it to start in order to get a quote! (we are trying to give YOU money FFS!) then followed up by saying when we gave exact date that it couldnt be insured when it wasnt on our property despite us having the ownership papers (what a load of nonsense).... Effectively you can only insure with NFU if you have already bought said vehicle (without even knowing whether you could get insured on it or not!) or alternatively lie about a renewal date in the next week!. think all their nonsense is a ploy to try and make you use them as you wont have time to look at other companies. Absolutely ridiculous, have heard some horror stories about them from about renewals too, will NEVER use them.

Really sad, I keep hearing this about NFU. they paid out £5000 to me 3 years ago when I lost my horse to a broken leg then they also gave me his market value. When I bought a new horse, I switched companies as NFU quoted silly money to insure a perfectly healthy young horse. So sad. :(

Not just horse owners they are screwing over seems House and Car insurance quotes are being doubled too!

http://www.reviewcentre.com/reviews-all-56925.html

My renewal isn't till March no idea what I will do as horse will be rising 18 and guessing if I move I will only be offered veteran insurance elsewhere, which I don't want as she is (hopefully still will be) fit, well and still competing.

Shame they seem to on the way down, but to be honest I went off them a while ago. I had a tractor insured with them and planned to move the house/outbuildings over at renewal. At the end of the tractor policy I had a letter saying I should insure it elsewhere, so I did. And the house. No idea why, I'd not claimed :confused: Strange company

They sent me a renewal quote for my car - with their loyalty bonus it was a very kind renewal of 50 quid a month more than I was currently paying! I rang them up disgusted and with quite a few examples of where I could get my car insurance cheaper and they said leave it with them. A day later I got a call back saying they would give me a renewal for less than what I was currently paying by a few pounds so I stuck with them. I hope they are not going out of business, they were really good a one point but must admit a bit sick now with the constant rephrasing of info on horse insurance so that now any ailment my horse might have had, claimed for or otherwise, is not covered.
