Bloody fuming, NFU insurance

Weebrown all the insurance companies do this now as far as I can tell - you are asked if the horse has ever had the problem, even if you never claimed for it. It does slightly backfire on them all I think because it means you might as well claim for everything, not just the super expensive things.

When my mare went down with Laminitis/Cushings, my insurance company (not NFU) asked for her history from my vets for the entire 12 year period I owned her. I'm sure if her records had shown any possibility of her having laminitis in the past they wouldn't have paid up.

Are we not surprised that insurance cost are rocketed, they will all follow suit I should imagine. All these no win no fee claims are crippling the industry. I agree the price rises are very high, but so is the cost of vet fees. I've heard that the equine part of the NFU is none profit making, not saying that is true but on both of my horses I've had my premium back 10 times over.

Find it so odd how some people premiums went up so much this year and mine only went up £70 (less than 10%). I also rang around the other companies, KBIS wanted her vetted (although only isured for £3500) and were only £10 cheaper. Was also hesitant about KBIS as when my friend was claiming for vet referred physio costs they wanted a new vet claim form filled out for every invoice submitted. Very anal and the vet practise got really cross about it. SEIB were £100 more and Petplan £200 more!!!! So I stuck with NFU.

Family been using them for years.

They recently paid out with no quibbles when my shetland died :( BUT as she died unexpectly overnight I was a bit rushed and flustered when dealing with them and they didn't tell me I had to get my vet out to certify death, so after arraning for cremation company to collect pony I then had to call vet out just to come and look at pony and say 'yep, she's dead'. They wouldn't accept cremation companies word

Then, 2 weeks later I get a renewal notice for said pony, followed by a reminder letter  When I got on the phone they tried to tell me I hadn't spoken to their office and had originally called their main office - which I didn't. Did get an apology, followed by a 'so, do you want us to cancel this policy then?

Won't insure with them again even though they used to be good.

Do you think NFU are going to stop insuring horses?? Thats my theory for their massive price increases. Mine last year went up from £30 to £60 per month.

I think it's because they less exclusions now. For example my horse has Ringbone in both front feet, 2 years ago both his front legs would have been excluded, but now they only exclude the condition. So if he now gets laminitis in his front feet I can claim. Were as before I wouldn't. So maybe that's why they are now more expensive. In one way it is better cover, but I suppose the increase is the price we have to pay. I tried a few others Petplan were £500 more & KBIS or SEIB ( not sure which one now) Was cheaper than the NFU but only provided vet fees up to £3000 were the NFU were &5000. I have a claim in at the moment so I expect mine to increase drastically next year :-(

Stopped using them 2 yrs ago when premiums rocketed, and they refused to price match other insurers. Also had a terrible time when my mare had to be PTS. Two vets agreed that she required immediate destruction, they rang NFU vet for approval, he said no keep her going for 2 weeks it is only a sprained hock (diagnosis made over the phone!!!) I offered to send a video of the poor girl to his mobile phone so he could see the distress she was in. Had her PTS anyway, the only humane thing to do, and had a pm. There was an area of necrotic tissue deep in her hock, it would have been inoperable and could only have got worse, unable to be seen on scan or x ray. I kicked up a huge fuss, it was my daughters mare and they were distraught about the amount of pain M was in, and NFU paid out, got an apology as well.
They lost the 6 horses, 2 cars, lorry and household insurance.

Just because you make a claim your premiums shouldn't go up - it's not like car insurance and a no claims discount.

Equine insurance companies aren't supposed to penalise clients for seeking treatment for their horses - otherwise people may stop getting the vet out and poses a welfare risk to the horse.
