We think my horse has done his tendon again...4th time the 11 year old horse that you can not get more than 6 weeks work from without another injury..has spent 3 years of his life on box rest. This time he has broken down whilst on field rest with another injury.

My mum is saying I should box rest bandage and bite over the weekend and then she will come have a proper look on Monday. His leg is so swollen that I can hardly get the bandage done up.

I'm happy to go down the route of scans and more box rest but this is a Horse that climbs the Walls on box rest and I really don't know what is best for is now.

WWYD?

Disclaimer I have spoken to my vet who agreed with what my mum said and she will obviously be called if anything got worse over weekend.

Yes I think I am going to have too. I can not keep him if he can not be happy in the field. I won't do it. I love this horse with all my heart but he is not right in himself at the moment or physically.

Get the scan done and then you can understand exactly what you are dealing with.

With dryer weather on the way speak to your vet about whether you could set up a 12 foot by 12 foot electric fence pen in the field so he can rest without climbing the walls.

If the scan results aren't great and/or there is no practical way of resting him a difficult decision on his future might well be worth considering.

Poor you, honestly if it was me i would also start thinking about PTS, if he isn't sound in the field and is on box rest often, and like you say clearly doesn't like box rest it's not ideal for you or him. Or if scans come back and something can be done perhaps reduce him to a hacker or companion but again this is expensive and if you wanted something to ride not idea.

Good Luck Op xx

Im really sorry your care and efforts arent being rewarded by the Fates with any kind of good luck.

All I can say is once you have a clearer picture on this episode and the likely prognosis, we will all think of you and send you the best vibes whatever decision you think is the best for this horse.

sorry to hear this OP
I have a little pony (welsh B) who I have decided anything that involves box rest will not be treated (maybe a week but no more) she has had lami (day after bought) which needed box rest, followed by 6 months of feet issues (caused by the earlier lami), with us she has never had a repeat attack but has also had ligament injury in the field that needed box rest (and she has never fully recovered) she lives out happily but I have decided if she cannot live out without lami or if she has any injury that needs box rest I will PTS
seems harsh maybe but she really goes loopy on box rest, I think she actually looses her mind. It changes her personality! I really think it would be unfare to put her through it.
With the issues you have I would be thinking PTS as you really need him to be able to live out happily if he cannot be ridden.
See how it goes, it may be an injury that will heal quick and this time you wont need box rest.
all the best with your decission

Thank you everyone. I can not even section a bit in the field as he will jump out (last injury before this) my lovely boss even brought a round pen for him but he was slamming himself into it to get to his friends. I do hope his real owners will be in agreement with my decision whatever I decide. He is on full loan.
Its so tricky as I can't just leave him out If he can be a companion as he won't drink in the field even when I went as far as ordering bottled water!!

I would actually start thinking about pts to be honest.

I was going to suggest the same sadly, what a awfully soul destroying situation to be in. However I assume you are not a bottomless pit of money and his quality of life is/could be affected.

TBH, if its the same tendon damaged four time then i would suspect its not an injury that is ever going to really heal. I would seriously be considering PTS if the horse is stressed on box rest but cant live out :(

What a shame :( I would also add cold hosing to your list and apply cold boots if you have got them.

Are you sure it's the tendon and your'e not just thinking the worst? I agree with some of the other comments though, if no improvement, get the scan done and make some informed decisions from that. I really hope the situation improves for both you and your horse.x

It is his tendon for sure looks like a banana!

It's not really about the money tbh if I had to beg and borrow and sell everything get credit cards etc I would but I don't want to do all that if I'm going to end up with a phsyco horse who us extremely un happy. I have two field pets and they are happy and come in if heavy rain or it's freezing! They are both extremely happy but I cannot see this boy being the same :(

I'm so sorry that you & your horse have had so much bad luck :(- and I do think that yet more box rest isn't fair on either of you. Had to make same decision last June when my "lifetime jumping pony" MRI'd with DDFT & navicular at only 10. That was a hard but right decision to make - he hated box rest & I couldn't do that to him any more. Thinking of you both, and I'm sure you will be brave enough to do the right thing:(
