I recently swapped my 5 years old 7.5t box for a 3.5t as it was causing me endless problems and expence - i have just been and weighed my 3.5t box and without any tack or horses it weighs 2.8t - which means with a passenger and horse and tack it is probably overweight.

What can i do about it? has i been ripped off by the manufacturer? It was made as suitable for 2 x horses.

I don't know what to do, is a volvo xc60 suitable for towing?

Was planning on picking up a new horse this weekend, what is the point when i can't travel anywhere with them?
 
Ring them, see what they say. If it was advertised as 2 horse, then its not fit for purpose. Is it a from a 'proper' builders, not that that should matter but I would like to think you'd have more come back.
 
Threaten them with trading standards and get them to take it back. If that doesn't work, actually phone trading standards they are excellent

firsty it is physicly impossible to have a 3.5 ton with much more than 1200 kg payload so if they said it will carry two horses they are lieing two ponys maybe so yours will carry 700kg not good but should be ok for all but the biggest
horse, XC 60 no unless you only want to tow a single horse ... if you have XC60 money there is a lot of choice in proper tow cars/doublecabs IE shogun, discovery, jeep etc...
 
Most 3.5t boxes CAN indeed TAKE 2 horses, that isn't a lie. However, what is not stated, and it could be caveat emptor(buyer beware), is that it would be overweight to take them on the road. Before purchasing my own 3.5t, I was aware of this, and whilst mine could indeed fit 2 x 17.2hh horses in it, it would not be legal for me to go on public roads...
This is not a problem unique to the smaller boxes, a fair few of the bigger ones, say 7.5t, could not legally carry the number of horses they state without being over the legal payload.
Your 700kg payload should be ample for a 600kg horse with tack, and driver,(unless driver is especially heavy!)but if in doubt take the box when fully loaded to a weighbridge to check for sure.
I have been told the police have a leeway of 100kg, but I am not intending to find out, and stay within my legal limits!
 
Sorry to read about your new horsebox, 700kg does seem a low payload.
I have heard that you can get 3.5t boxes uprated to 3.9t - if you don't get anywhere with the supplier then perhaps that is something you could look into.

You would need to be straight onto trading standards as lorry sold is not fit for purpose.

Also an equine solicitor would be an advantage

What make of box is it? Ie Renault master etc
Are you able to mention the manufacturers name? Please PMme if you cant do it on the forum.

Also, if you need details of uprating your box to 3.9ton - Let me know. I have all of the info.
 
wow 700Kg payload!! Just searched a company I know that do 3.5 boxes http://www.3countieshorseboxes.co.uk/ and their standard 2 horse box has a payload of 1350Kg!

If you've bought new, I would assume that you must have a case of not fit for purpose.... Try the manufacturer direct and if no luck, go to trading standards.

For many 3.5 ton boxes the payload is betwen 1000 & 1200 kg. They may well be stalled for 2 horses & there may actually be enough room for 16h2"horses in them but weight wise you would struggle to put a couple of 14h2" ponies in there & remain within wieght.

The ulw will be the weight of the box will be with an empty fuel tank, no driver or passenger & no tack etc. If you say your horses are around 600kg each that will take up the weight & that is without the weight of driver & passenger, fuel, tack etc.

I firmly believe that 3.5 ton boxes are really either single horse carriers or possibly designed to carry 2 ponies.

I would love to take one to a weighbridge in ready to use condition with fuel and sparewheel etc!!!!! if I was buying any lorry it would be going over the scales BEFORE I parted with my cash..
