So my poor old boy has some cracks in his nose which I have not been able to resolve. The nose is dry and the cracks are on top by the nostrils. I personally think he might have discoid lupus, vet disagrees but biopsy would be needed to find out which isn't a go when he is generally fit and well. I put salve on the nose regularly but it remains dry. One of the cracks has started to bleed intermittently, and as you can imagine it is quite bloody, very messy and very red. It stops relatively quickly, and starts when he gets worked up which he does a lot being a working line GSD or if it touches anything.

I've given up on healing the nose long term but the blood is horrendous, I'm mopping up walls and carpet every hour or so. I need a practical solution to either stop the blood spray or close up the sore patch. I can't think of anything except, like, a clown nose and I doubt he will tolerate it! I'd resign him to his cage in the kitchen but he will be upset if he is in there poor lad. And it is hardly his fault he has a nosebleed and makes a mess.

Gah. It looks like there have been murders! Any thoughts welcome.

Try manuka honey, SadKen. Your boy may well lick some of it off (but at least it's nutritious!). It could well improve the condition.
Edited to add, you need to apply often.

My friends GSD had lupus and he always had a sore, cracked nose. Does your dog have inflammation between his toes at all?
A course of steroids used to help my friends dog.

There are some good paw and nose balms on the market.

Yup, and a sore groin either side of the nuts. I have cleared up the paws with a lot of work and various potions, but the groin is still bad and the nose is pretty classically lupus. When I asked the vet he didn't think so and didn't want to trial steroids, he sold me a 25 quid pack of wipes and told me to keep him clean, which I've done. I could take him back but the expectation was to knock him out and biopsy, which I don't want. I would like to try a course of steroids. I guess we could ask a different vet.

KD honey might be worth a go, I could give him a toy while it's on, keep him occupied longer!

It does sound like pemphigus (of which there are a number of forms, including lupus). These tend to need biopsy for confirmation. Steroids may well be the treatment of choice, eventually. Meanwhile, Manuka honey could help calm things down. Hoping you get resolution to the problem soon.
